Kaitlyn Gleeson is currently studying first year medicine at Deakin University after completing a biomedicine degree, also at Deakin.
Kaitlyn has been a recipient of the East Gippsland Steers for Students program and this week caught up with with Steers for Students committee member, Judi Alexander, at Bairnsdale.
Kaitlyn was only full of praise for the local program that partly funds local students after they complete year 12 and move away from the area to complete tertiary study.
The program works as businesses or individuals donate funds to the program’s committee and students are considered for the program in concert with the local school community.
Mrs Alexander said the past local selling agents have been very charitable when dealing with the cattle involved in the program as well as individuals and service clubs.
Anyone can become involved in the program by giving a direct donation.
“Every donation, large or small, will make a difference to local students taking the quantum step to tertiary education away from home,” Mrs Alexander said.
All donations are fully tax deductible and this year the committee have more than 24 students listed going back to 2017.
Current committee members of the most successful program are Martin Sroczynski, Paul Heaton Harris, Ray Smith, Garry Ball, Frank Brown-Graham, and the enthusiastic and effervescent Mrs Alexander who would love any local farmer, individual or business to contact her on 0407 950 459 who may consider the great program for local students progressing to tertiary studies.
“It’s a program that helps break the cycle of what people can achieve. If you are fortunate enough to look over the list of students their achievements and directions are inspirational,” Mrs Alexander said.
