Probus Club of Bairnsdale held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 10, at the Bairnsdale Bowls Club.
The guest speaker was Nigel Herbert, a dietician from Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS).
He spoke about the healthy hearts program run by BRHS which gives assistance to achieving a healthy lifestyle and to lower the risk of heart disease.
Nigel spoke about the importance of diet and need to avoid highly processed foods and high sugar content.
Also present from BRHS was Rachael Murray, a physiotherapist who provided everyone with a survey to fill out on health issues and she will report back at the next meeting on the survey results.
The profile speaker was Geoff Johnston.
Geoff was born in Omeo where their family had Tongio Station including the post office and manual telephone exchange and other property at Cobrunga.
During the war Geoff said they had no problem with rationing as they killed three sheep weekly for three families and no refrigeration.
Cream was kept cool by lowering it down a well. Geoff still does not like eating lamb.
After year eight he went to Bendigo school of mines but with a Polio epidermic he had to return home.
Later he went to Trinity Grammar as a border.
Sadly with the death of his father as a teenager he came home to manage the properties.
With high wool prices during the Korean War the property was sold and he moved to Forge Creek.
They walked the sheep down to Forge Creek, unfortunately because of a bushfire in the 1970s the property was burnt out.
Geoff has travelled a lot and enjoys boating and golf.
