This Sunday, April 28, the accomplished young pianist, Joshua Hooke, will demonstrate the skills already gaining him accolades both in Australia and overseas.
In this concert, presented by POMEG, Josh has chosen a program of variety and emotional impact, as well as of technical and musical challenges.
You are strongly encouraged to become part of his audience. The concert will start with a short piece by 20th century Spanish composer Federico Mompou, who is renowned for his magical harmonies and intimate moods.
The remainder of the first half is devoted to Robert Schumann’s Carnavale, which colorfully portrays the nuances of a masked ball during the carnival season.
In 21 very short pieces the audience will hear glittering pianism and a vivid portrayal of the festive atmosphere.
The second half of the program is devoted to two towering composers, Frenchman Claude Debussy and Russian Igor Stravinsky.
After a short and exquisite little waltz composed by Debussy as a fund
raiser for the war-wounded of the 1914-1918 Great War, Josh will play four of Debussy’s much loved Preludes (from Book I), which encompass the unique soundscapes so indicative of the composer.
Josh’s final performance is of the stunning three movements of Petrushka. Originally composing the ballet for orchestra, Stravinsky then made an arrangement for solo piano.
All three movements contain wild and rapid jumps spanning over two octaves, complex rhythms and extremely fast passages, all requiring great technical agility.
Audiences of the earliest performances of Stravinsky’s music were challenged and excited by what they heard and its impact continues to the present day.
The concert is this Sunday, 2 pm, at Bairnsdale Uniting Church, corner of Great Alpine Road and Lanes Road, Lucknow.
Pay at the door.
Tea and coffee will be available during interval. School students are free.
