East Gippsland United Football Club’s senior men’s team brought home another win against Tyers Soccer Club at home last Sunday but it took some effort to do so.
The game didn’t start well with a series of passing errors allowing easy turnovers for the opposition.
A couple of early chances at goals were lost due to hasty and misjudged shots, while at the other end Tyers hit the crossbar.
It was hard work for the midfield as they tried to send the ball forward but the Tyers defenders held firm, continually repelling the attack and sending the ball back down the ground.
Keeper Lui Albornoz read the ball well to stop a Tyers penalty but there was nothing he could do when the Eagles defenders allowed the ball through for a Tyers goal 33 minutes in.
Despite a number of attempts, the Eagles still couldn’t convert when in front of the nets.
Needing to lift their intensity, the Eagles started the second half determined, but continued to be plagued by inaccuracy and the Tyers keeper got a good workout.
When Oscar Bury was temporarily sent off for dissent, Tyers did their best to take advantage but Albornoz and the defenders stopped the attack.
Returning to the pitch, Bury redeemed himself when he received a deflected ball and calmly slotted it into the top right hand corner of the net, levelling the score at 70 minutes.
The goal lifted the Eagles’ spirits and Jaydon Steele put another into the net three minutes later but was called offside.
With extra time on the clock, both sides were fighting hard for control when Josh West had a great run down the line before passing to Steele.
Steele continued the run before passing back to West, now at the top of the box, who launched the ball past the keeper, sealing a 2-1 victory before the whistle blew.
The reserves had the weekend off when Tyers unfortunately had to forfeit the match.
In a challenging encounter against the formidable Sale White, the under 13 Eagles suffered a 4-0 defeat.
Anticipating a tough match against their skilled opponents, the Eagles entered the field prepared for a battle, having previously faced Sale White twice in the grading rounds.
Throughout the first half, Sale White dictated the pace of the game, netting three goals and asserting their dominance.
Despite their best efforts, the Eagles struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities.
The second half witnessed an improved performance from the Eagles, yet they remained unable to breach Sale’s defence.
Despite the loss, the match served as a valuable learning experience for the Eagles, highlighting areas for improvement as they return to the training ground.
Jay Sutherland’s unwavering commitment and consistency on the field earned him the title of coach’s player of the match, demonstrating resilience and composure amidst adversity.
The under 15 Eagles travelled to Tyers for an impressive 19-0 win, with the opposition having a hard time getting the ball from the Eagles forwards.
The team had many opportunities at goal and took a little while to warm up but once they started, they couldn’t be stopped with eight goals in the first half.
There were many highlights in the match for the Eagles, including early in the second half, when Cooper Claridge (who kicked five goals) went head-to-head with an opponent, trapping him on the boundary, forcing a turnover and passing to Eve Hamer who set the ball up for Rafael Rodriguez to shoot and score.
At the 55th minute the forwards and defence traded positions which gave everyone the chance to score.
The huge win was shared between eight goalkickers showing off the team’s diverse skillset.
Goals were scored by Rodriguez, Claridge, Mason Radley, Dion Strydis, Jesse Williams, Spencer Bastian, Rayner Bonifacio and Caleb Till.
Radley was named player of the match having a terrific game with many close attempts at goal, scoring one in the first half and assisting in many other goal opportunities.
All sides have away games this weekend, the senior teams tackling Churchill on Sunday, the under 13s playing Traralgon City at HP Reserve in Traralgon Saturday, while the under 15s are at Olympic Park in Moe against Moe/Newborough.
