Last week CFA volunteers conducted three roadside burns in the local area.
These burns were made possible by the proactive work behind the scenes by CFA vegetation management support officer, Stella Thurbon, from Heyfield.
The first burn was completed on the Great Alpine Highway by Sarsfield and Mt Taylor brigades with assistance from Forrest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV).
Two other burns were conducted at Stratford on the Princes Highway and Bengworden Road. Members from Stratford, Heyfield, Callignee, Sarsfield, Mt Taylor, Newry, HQ Bairnsdale Brigades, and FFMV were involved.
These cool burns will reduce the fuel loads adjacent to the roads thereby providing increased protection during fire events.
The Stratford ‘strategically located’ burns provide tactical advantage to fire fighting events – especially from fires to the north.
Importantly planned burning also provides opportunities for skills maintenance and up-skilling of volunteers not normally involved in fuel reduction activities. It also provides inter-brigade networking which is essential during major fire events.
Brigades thanked those involved and to the traveling public for showing patience working with traffic management, to ensure the safety of the volunteers.
