Chief executive officer of Distinctive Options, Ernie Metcalf, made a presentation to Peter Ward at Noweyung last Thursday to recognise Peter’s 50-year association with Noweyung and the community – a lifetime performance.
Noweyung organised morning tea for Peter with his family, friends and people who have come to know him through work and his social activities over the past 50 years.
Locals who attended come from all walks of life, a sign of Peter’s likeable personality.
Peter came to Bairnsdale in 1974 with his family and it was not long before he weaved his was into many areas of the community. Today, Peter is well known around the town by retailers and fair dinkum locals. He is a staunch Wy Yung supporter in football and cricket, and adores the Western Bulldogs at AFL level.
Peter worked for many years part-time at the Bairnsdale Advertiser, has had a stint picking vegetables, and also at FCF Woodworking.
Peter is also well-known for his territorial profitable can collecting business and loved his time with Noweyung’s radio chat show, Yackety Yak.
These days Peter says he is busy keeping fit by walking around town and looking after his wife, Mary-Lou.
Replying to Mr Metcalf’s kind words, Peter touched the hearts of those present as he mentioned he still misses his mum and dad, Bill and Norma Ward.
He went on to personally name people in the room and thank those who have been kind to him and helped him along the way.
Peter’s morning tea was a salute to him by the community he has enjoyed and contributed so much to over the past 50 years.
