Educating the next generation is front of mind for organisers at the Mountain Cattleman’s Association of Victoria (MCAV) Get-Together and last Friday, the Cattle Kids and Poddies events, aimed at younger riders, took place in the rain with plenty of help from older riders.
The ever-popular novelty events like the tug-o-war, haystacking dog high jump and Mulga Bill bicycle race always draw big crowds.
In recent years, the Cattlemen’s Cup, which involved a race across paddocks and waterways, has changed format to become the more modern stockman’s challenge, where competitors take part in a bareback obstacle course, a whipcracking event and a dry pattern, immediately followed by a cattle handling event on the first day of competition.
The top six then went into finals on Sunday.
The open winner was Daryl Baines who went into the finals in fourth place, 25 points behind leader, Sam Webb. Mr Webb finished second after the finals, followed by David Mitchell, Brett Lancaster, Lincoln Adams and Troy Nicholls.
In the ladies, Hayley Hinton had a handy lead and kept it, with second going to Kelsie Lupson, followed by Hannah Blair, Ruby McCourt, Tash Adams and Katie Faithfull.
In the juniors Luke Turnbull was a clear winner followed by Harrison Scarlett, Brooke Uren, Eadie Everard, Montana Robinson and Rhyme Anderson.
Anecdotal reports from security guards and police officers were complimentary of crowd behaviour, with only a few minor incidents.
