It’s that time of the year, when the bluebloods hit the track chasing Australian racing’s ultimate prize, the elusive Melbourne Cup, which coincides with East Gippsland’s social event of the year, the Bairnsdale races.
Yes, the year has flown and that first Tuesday in November is upon us again, a chance for people to frock up and look their finest, checking
out the horses on track at the Bairnsdale racecourse, while keeping up-to-date with all the action from Flemington.
In recent weeks there have been cup meetings at Moe and Sale, attracting big crowds, with next week’s focus turning to Bairnsdale and major meetings planned for Stony Creek, Traralgon and the region’s picnic tracks over the next few weeks and months.
Bairnsdale will offer an attractive six-race program, beginning just after noon, with four races run at 35-minute intervals before an hour break in the build-up to the holy grail, the Melbourne Cup.
After the running of the 3200-metre classic, the final two races of the day will be run and won.
Fashion on the Field will again be run, with four categories accommodating the patrons: most fashionable junior, most stylish squad, gentleman and lady of the day.
Bairnsdale Racing Club is happy with the initial bookings for the day, but still have opportunities for dining packages, marque and umbrella packages.
If those packages don’t suit you, general admission is an attractive option that can be snapped up on the day or by pre purchase.
Inspirational youngster Tanner McMillan will be the guest speaker at the club luncheon, talking about his upcoming trek of the 90-mile beach for his “Epic Hike for Lyme” cause.
Musicians Oliver Lay and DJ Jock Coates will entertain the punters on track between races.
There will be children’s entertainment, a plenty of with a pet zoo, jumping castle, a mini golf course on track and plenty more.
The club also offers a unique child-minding service, which includes a meal and an ice cream.
Food trucks will be on track to feed the hungry hordes and with great weather looking likely, it’s a must attend day on the local social calendar.
