The Hangout – a local initiative supporting Omeo and surrounding region’s youth – has been recognised for its work in promoting diversity and inclusion at the biennial Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) Rural Youth Awards held at Parliament House in Melbourne last month.
The Hangout received the Outstanding Youth Project promoting diversity and inclusion award for the Pride Fete held in Omeo last year.
“The Hangout set about planning for the Pride Fete after some local young people were criticised by their peers for wearing LGBTQIA+ ally badges,” Omeo District Health’s Youth Worker, Tiffany Brammall, said.
“In the face of that criticism and in a brave act of solidarity, the Hangout seized the opportunity by organising the Pride Fete, raising awareness of and celebrating diversity in the community with a range of fun activities and entertainment, including a performance by young local singer Lilly Leggett.
“Initiatives like the Pride Fete are important to reinforce the message that there is no room for discrimination or victimisation based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
“Congratulations to the Hangout members of Ryli Ayton, Courtney Kerrison, Lillie Hansson, Matilda Sheean and Katarin and Patrick Weaver, and to the many local organisations whose sponsorship and support made the Pride Fete possible.”
