Last week’s announcement, regarding the future plans for Dahlsens, has caused mixed public emotion drawing supporters as well as those cynical about the company’s intentions. Company co-chairman, John Dahlsen, said the planned move to a complex at 108 Forge Creek Road, adjacent to the racecourse, would improve operations significantly.
The company will relocate its trade box business in Dalmahoy Street and roof truss plant in East Bairnsdale, with 7000 square metres undercover and another 7000m2 for outdoor activities.
The existing garden centre and café will remain in Dalmahoy Street.
“We’ve never been so open about our activities before but I’m glad we’ve done it,” Mr Dahlsen said.
“I think people accepted the news in the spirit in which it was delivered, which is to benefit the town.”
He said the application went to council last week.
“We’re hoping the planning approval will come in no more than three months, it’s very uncontroversial.
“The minute we get a building permit we’ll start.”
Finding a buyer or lessee for the Dalmahoy property has so far proved fruitless, with Mr Dahlsen preferring a large corporate to make its home there to benefit shoppers and businesses in town.
He said Dahlsens would look at building serviced and un-serviced apartments, possibly for aged care if an alternative was not found.
Many invited locals enjoyed catching up at the event last week.
