Finals Fever

| EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 24 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2024 Lucknow earned another crack at arch rival Boisdale Briagolong with a hardfought 16 point victory over Stratford in the reserves preliminary final. The minor premier was embarrassed last week against the Bombers, failing to kick a goal but that was quickly forgotten this week as they scored two majors in the first term, courtesy of Shaun Ryan and Jack Kennedy. Key forward Ryan was a focal point all match kicking three goals in another reserves finals match that wasn't the greatest spectacle. Logan Croucher, James Sanford and Kyran McNaughton all impressed in and around the midfield and will come under close consideration for the senior berth vacated by the suspension Brendan Flinn. Giant ruckman Scott Joustra gave the Magpies first use of the football with his opponent Lincoln Toner more effective in gathering possessions around the ground. Shannon Cottrell and Blake Cuttriss battled hard for the Swans, as did veteran Jesse Broadbent. After being kept goalless in the first term the Swans lifted in the second, a late goal from Jimmy Bavadra drawing them within 13 points at half time. Last week's star for the Swans Chris Webb didn't impact the scoreboard and had to wander a long way from goal to gain possessions. The second half became a real slog with only three goals kicked as both sides struggled in terribly windy conditions. Orbost Snowy Rovers were victorious in the thirds, defeating Lakes Entrance by 35 points to progress through to the grand final where minor premier Lindenow awaits. In less than ideal conditions the Seagulls didn't kick their first goal of the game until late in the final term with the heat well and truly out of the match by then. The Blues made good use of the wind in the first term as league best and fairest winner Brayden Fenner continued his great form, well supported by the likes of Toby Herbert, Fletcher Kleinitz and Hugh Barnes, the Blues' leading by 13 points. Orbost Snowy continually frustrated the Seagulls in the second term, bottling the ball up on the dead side of the ground, the Blues weren't able to score, but restricted Lakes Entrance to just four behinds, the lead cut back to nine points at half time. The Blues came out after half time meaning business, kicking three unanswered goals Bobby Bills and Jacob Farley began to dominate. Charlie Goold was giving his all across half back for the Seagulls, getting support from Kurt Grabham and Baxter Bennett, while Max Stevens continued to impress. The last quarter was party time for the Blues as Kruze Farley (four goals), entertained the crowd with his extraordinary goalkicking talent. GRAND FINALS Saturday, September 7, at Bairnsdale City Oval One-goal thrillers Lakes Entrance scored a comefrom-behind victory in "B" grade to advance to the grand final against the unbeaten Boisdale Briagolong. Wy Yung was out of the blocks early, establishing a four-goal advantage by quarter time, but the Seagulls coaching panel was happy with their side's effort late in the quarter, the confidence coming out after the break. Lakes made several positional changes at quarter time, Brittney Seccull's movement into the centre paying immediate rewards as the Seagulls upped the tempo, winning the quarter by a goal and drawing within three goals at half time. Molly Stevens was proving a stumbling block for the Tigers. She would finish the game with 32 goals. With Indi Kellow leading the way in the third term, combining well with Ash Wheeler and Pru Wyndham-Martin, the Tigers regained their advantage, leaders by five goals at three quarter time. Lakes was hoping if it could convert every chance the defensive play created they could still win and that's exactly what happened, dominating the last term getting up to win by a goal 37-36, in a near perfect final term. It was another close encounter in "C" grade with Wy Yung winning by a goal, 28-27, over a gallant Stratford. Nothing separated the sides throughout the match, the Tigers holding on to their solitary goal three quarter time advantage in a torrid final term. Caitlin Woodward, Jasmin McAuliffe, Kirby Banks and Susan Hill were all among the best for the Tigers, with Gracie Richardson, Lauren Wilson, Kym and Payton Albrecht all prominent for the Swans. Boisdale Briagolong was much too good for Lakes Entrance in "D" grade winning by 15 goals after a dominant second term. The Bombers got plenty of game time into their list as they prepare to tackle Wy Yung, who defeated them in the qualifying final after they were unbeaten in the home and away season. Wy Yung continued its outstanding finals form, easily accounting for Boisdale Briagolong 31-20 in the under 17s. The Tigers only finished fourth on the later, but have taken all before them in recent weeks, deserving of the opportunity to tackle Lakes Entrance who have only been beaten once for the season. Wy Yung was more consistent over the four quarters while the Bombers only really hit their straps in the third quarter off the back of some great shooting from Demi Scriven. A determined Paynesville held off Lucknow in the under 15s to win by two goals, 27-25. It's a been a lean year for the Gulls in both football and netball, but with the whole club behind them the netballing youngsters have played to their full potential in recent weeks, creating a good vibe around the club. The Gulls were five goals in front at half time before an inspired effort from the Magpies in the third term saw them snatch the lead by a goal with a quarter to play. Not deterred Paynesville stuck to its game plan, regaining the lead and holding off a spirited late challenge, much to the delight of their faithful supporters. Outstanding Orbost Snowy Orbost Snowy Rovers caused an upset, comfortably accounting for Wy Yung in the East Gippsland “A” Grade netball preliminary final at the Lindenow Recreation Reserve. The Tigers finished second on the ladder after the home and away season, entitling them to pre-game favouritism, but the Blues juggernaut has gained momentum in the past few weeks after sneaking into the finals on percentage. The first quarter was a free-flowing contest with nothing separating the sides as they looked for any early advantage. League best and fairest winner Caitlin Wright was leading the way for the Tigers, engaging in an enthralling duel with Orbost coach Hayley Boxall. Wright and Symantha Churches were working hard in defence for Wy Yung creating some valuable turnovers, while Jewel Catlin and Jorja Savory were equally as effective at the other end. The Tigers began the second term with a one-goal advantage, but it was short-lived as the Blues lifted the tempo, Hollie Fuhrmann, Lauren Treacy and Courtney Wade creating plenty of opportunities for Karina Robinson and Boxall. Robinson, who shot 32 goals for the match, had her best quarter banking 10 goals at a high percentage rate. By half time Orbost Snowy Rovers had opened up a five-goal lead with the Tigers struggling to stay in the match, having to adapt to playing without key defender Alison Lipski, who was ruled out due to injury on Thursday. Playing with plenty of confidence, the Blues again applied maximum pressure early in the third term with a place in the grand final getting closer and closer with every goal. Catlin and Savory continued to harass the Tiger shooters, as midcourt errors grew, Boxall and Robinson doing the rest as the lead grew to 11 by three quarter time. With a large contingent of supporters right behind him them there was no stopping the Blues, who continued to go from strength-to-strength, even taking the opportunity to rest Fuhrmann in the final stanza, Lucy Quin coming on and continuing the Blues dominance through the mid-court. Orbost Snowy Rovers was an impressive winner by 16 goals, the coaching staff quickly into recovery mode with all eyes on Lucknow, who have taken all before them this season, under the coaching of Erica Lynch, losing only one game.
