Bedggood's Bombers easily accounted for Lucknow by 32 points, putting the Magpies to the sword in a dominant 20-minute patch either side of three quarter time to seal their first EGFNL senior flag and break a 23-year senior premiership drought. Bedggood joined the Bombers after a long career at Maffra, which saw him play at senior level alongside twin brother Daniel, who is now the Eagles' games record holder. A junior coach at Maffra, Bedggood was always keen to coach at senior level and will be forever grateful for the opportunity afforded to him by the Boisdale Briagolong committee. "It's alway been a goal to coach at senior level and to cap off four great years with a premiership, it doesn't get much better than that," Bedggood said. It hasn't always been plain sailing at Bomberland, but Bedggood knew if they kept working hard and put the structures in place, success would come. "We had lots of injuries over the first three years, one year we finished on the bottom of the ladder, but we kept believing and we have delivered the club its first flag since 2001," Bedggood said. Bedggood was keen to praise the efforts of the committee and supporters who stuck fat, while singling out football manager, Jayden Pratt, for his efforts. "Jayden Pratt is a big part of this, we sat down over the summer and worked out what we needed to get the job done after being so close last year, and we have pulled it off," Bedggood said. After playing three seasons as a backman, Bedggood has gone forward this season, his three goals on Saturday pivotal in the final outcome, two of which came late in the third quarter. Bedggood has always thought that a coaching tenure should be around the four-year mark and now looks forward to playing some cricket over the summer while concentrating a bit more on the family and returning as a player in 2025. The Bombers will announce Maffra star, Kade Renooy, as their new coach when the dust settles on a drought-breaking season. Boisdale Briagolong captain Jim Reeves and coach Sam Bedgood lift the East Gippsland Football Netball League premiership cup after defeating Lucknow by 32 points at Bairnsdale City Oval last Saturday. A long time between drinks The celebrations were well underway in Boisdale Briagolong changerooms, the players dancing and singing along merrily to Sweet Caroline, as two lone figures sat in the trainers' room soaking up the atmosphere and moment together. Veterans Andrew Quirk and Toby Leeds have been here before, senior premiership players with Sale in the Gippsland League under the coaching of ex-Hawthorn player Adrian Cox when still eligible for the thirds back in 2008. Quirk added another premiership in 2012 to his collection under the tutelage of former Saint, Matthew Ferguson, before joining Boisdale where he has played 59 impressive games over the past four years, the defender rarely beaten in a one-on-one marking contest. Both have battled plenty of injuries over the years, Leeds with a dodgy back and Quirk with persistent knee problems, Leeds in particular spending huge amounts of time out of the game, his body unable to cope with the rigours of training and game day. The duo sat and chatted, reliving the memories of 2008 and how hard premierships are to win. "I was blessed back in 2008, I played in a premiership in my ninth senior game. You think that it's going to happen every year. 2012 is such a long time ago, but the feeling of being rewarded for the Toby Leeds and Andrew Quirk soaking up the premiership spoils. commitment and hard work is still great," Quirk said. Well managed through 2024, Quirk said his body felt surprisingly good. "It's held up well this year, looking forward to having a rest," he said. The thought of playing in another premiership hadn't even been in the equation until mid season for Leeds. He decided to give football another crack after concentrating on cricket in recent years. After putting together five reserves game in the back half of the season, he was thrust back into the limelight with his surprise selection for the vital preliminary final clash with Wy Yung. The Bombers were mindful they needed another experienced tall in the line up if they progressed to the grand final, given Lucknow's intercept marking specialist Andrew Nelson had been dominant in his club's semi final effort. "I was just filling in playing reserves, I really didn't see this coming. Sam Bedggood was continually checking on me, I didn't realise that I was in the plans, but the body has got better and better each week," Leeds said. Leeds was an important player across half back in the torrid first quarter, he and Quirk's efforts both pivotal in keeping the Bombers within striking distance of the Magpies who came out running. Despite carrying a corked thigh in the second half, Leeds continued to provide assistance to Matt Wilkinson in the ruck while taking a key defender roaming across half forward, his efforts in the ruck allowing the bearded giant to get forward and become a target in attack. Quirk was reliable all day in back six, marking when necessary, or punching the ball away from dangerous Lucknow opponents. 14 Dalmahoy Street, Bairnsdale | Open Hours 8am|5pm CONGRATULATIONS TO ALLTHE TEAMS IN 2024! 5150 1132 5152 9035 EN25147

EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 3 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 Porter adds to the legacy He’s had a long and distinguished career in Gippsland footballs major competition, but even in the twilight of an outstanding career, Kelvin Porter still loves winning. A two time premiership player (2010, 2018) competition best and fairest (2013), five time league team of the year (2012-2016) with Maffra in the Gippsland League was again at the coalface on Saturday helping orchestrate a Boisdale Briagolong win the 2024 East Gippsland Football Netball League. Porter finished his career at Maffra in 2018 and after a few years absence returned in 2022, where he has played 36 games for the Bombers, whilst working as a fly in fly out work. At 34, the man they call “Kel” is still the clearance king, the go to man and the competition’s best player, narrowly missing out on the best on ground award to brother in law, Tom Jolly, who is usually the beneficiary of at least six handball receives for Porter in every game. The modest and quietly spoken Porter, likes to play do his contribution but he was all smiles in the rooms afterwards, classing the Bomber victory as one of his career highlights. “It’s been a huge effort by the club led by Sam Bedggood to come from the wooden spoon a couple of years ago to a flag today,” Porter said. Now a family man, Porter said the win is so much sweeter. “It’s great to be able to share this victory with the wife (Emily) and kids, Ava and Levi, they will be great memories in the years to come,” Porter said. Looking fit and as refreshed in the rooms after the game, it looks like they is still some run in the legs of Porter, who will again be a key component in the Bombers quest for back to back success in 2025. Emily Porter played her 50th game for the Bombers ladies team in the recent grand final loss to Lindenow South, so her husband currently holds the bragging rights in the house. Kel Porter with son Levi, daughter Ava and wife Emily. Family connection They have inherited many names over the years, from the Kray or Bash brothers to B1 and B2, but Boisdale Briagolong’s Johnson twins - Daniel and Rhys - are just happy to be premiership players. The brothers are known for their hardness at the ball and are never ones to take a backward step on the field, which often gets under the skin of opposition players and spectators. Off the field the brothers are affable and don’t take themselves too seriously, keen to reflect on their 10-year journey to become senior premiership players of the club, where they came through the junior system. There have been plenty of highs and lows over the journey, including some significant injuries, but they never lost the belief the Bombers could win local football’s ultimate prize. Midfielder Daniel accumulated 19 possessions in a midfield role. “My job is not to get in the way of Porter, Glenane and Jolly, hopefully creating some space for them to hit up our forwards,” Daniel said. Both brothers were proud of the effort of all involved with the club. “We have done the hard yards and deserve our success, we were in the finals, then dropped to the bottom of the ladder, but we are back in a big way today,” Daniel said. Rhys played across half back and got plenty of the ball, taking some nice marks against taller opponents, always defending grimly. Both brothers were looking forward to the celebrations, although Daniel thinks Rhys might have him covered. “I’ve got the wife and kid these days, so I might not go as hard as I might once have, you can expect Rhys to be front and centre,” Daniel said. Fellow Boisdale brothers Billy, Nick and Ryan Marshall also celebrated premiership success. Premiership brothers Daniel and Rhys Johnson. Brothers Billy, Ryan and Nick Marshall with dad Kenny and the premiership cup. Jumping for Jolly Tom Jolly’s outstanding contribution over the past two seasons at Boisdale Briagolong was rewarded with best-on-ground honours in a premiership. Jolly crossed to the Bombers at the start of season 2023 after a successful career with Maffra in the Gippsland League, which resulted in two premierships (2016 and 2019). His two seasons at Boisdale have been action-packed and his input significant - he came with plenty of hype and he hasn’t disappointed. He has made the Bairnsdale Advertiser Team of the Year on both occasions, kicking 40 goals from 17 matches last year and 33 from 18 appearances this season. But Saturday was his crowning moment, combining well with brother-in-law Kel Porter, helping himself to 30 disposals including 13 marks. The star-studded Boisdale midfield all got plenty of football, but it was his four goals that cemented his selection as best on ground. His goal after the half time siren was the first major setback for Lucknow, while his two goals in the first two minutes of the final term put the game out of reach. Jolly was delighted his team had bounced back after last year’s grand final defeat at the hands of Wy Yung. “It’s great to get the job done for everyone involved with this great club, from supporters through to the playing group. Last year’s loss made us hungrier,” Jolly said. The midfield/forward was quick to play down his goals and their importance. “Every goal that is kicked in a grand final is important,” Jolly said. The celebrations at Boisdale are set to continue, Jolly and his joyous teammates unlocking the emotions of 23 years waiting for senior success. Tom Jolly was awarded best-on-ground, kicking four goals, gathering 30 disposals and taking 13 marks. | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 4 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 BOMBS AWAY - Boisdale Braigolong’s premiership bonanza - Boisdale Briagolong has broken a 23-year senior premiership drought, a convincing 32-point victor over Lucknow at Bairnsdale City Oval in the 2024 East Gippsland Football Netball League (EGFNL) senior grand final last Saturday. Not since back-to-back flags (2000-2001) in the now defunct Riviera Football League, under the guidance of Wayne Butcher, who went on to form a dynasty at Maffra, have the Bombers tasted ultimate glory. Both sides went into the finale high on confidence, knowing if they got it right on the day the premiership would be theirs for the taking. Nothing separated the two combatants through the first two quarters, the Bombers making their play for victory during the third term after a Tom Jolly goal after the half time siren delivered the Bombers a nine-point half time lead. The Magpies hung tough early in the third but through sheer persistence and the build up of repeat inside 50s, the Bombers eventually cracked both Lucknow and the game. With their three gun midfielders gathering 99 possessions between them, led by Jackson Glenane (35), Kel Porter (34) and Jolly (30), the Bomber juggernaut was up and running in the third term, as Sam Park, Andrew Nelson, Conor McAuliffe and Steve Bertino worked hard to stop scoring opportunities. The first of the term came from Lucknow's Jake Green, his classy snap narrowing the margin to just five points as Lucknow skipper Jesse Glassborow tried to tag Porter out of the game unsuccessfully. When the Magpies went forward, they struggled for marks, which was disappointing given they had targets like John Gooch, Jessie Pescod, Bayley Croucher, Dallas and Jackson Smith in the area. Andrew Quirk, Shamus Wain, Billy Marshall and Rhys Johnson stood tall under plenty of pressure for Boisdale. Dallas Smith limped to the bench with blood coming from his mouth midway through the third quarter. That would be the last he was seen. That evened the numbers up slightly, the Bombers losing Cal Egan and Tim Dessent early on in the match with leg and shoulder injuries respectively. Dessent was involved in a bone-crunching collision with Nelson, when both players had their eyes fixated on the football. Dessent was looking like having a big afternoon prior to the incident. Paddy Mack and Joel McNamara both had chances to goal, the latter failing to make the distance, before the Bomber tactic of resting the competition runner-up best and fairest close to goal, Matt Wilkinson, finally paid dividends, the big man marking and converting from close range early in time on. Boisdale wasn't done. It had finished the first two quarters strongly, and the third would be the same resulting in eight of their 15 majors being kicked in time on. Coach Sam Bedggood (three goals), who had plenty of stints on the bench throughout the day, but was fruitful when on the field, made the margin 18 points when he swooped on a loose advantage ball after a holding infringement and kicked truly on the run. Shortly after he marked an errant kick from Pescod and to Bombers' supporters delight he goaled after the three quarter time siren to make it a four-goal game. Both coaches gave plenty of instructions at the final change, calling on their charges for the ultimate effort. Bedggood asked his players to drive the advantage home and reward everyone around the club who has been waiting 23 long years. The Magpies were going to need to kick the first goal if they were too have any chances. They moved Pescod into the ruck, however that was quickly thwarted when Jolly (four goals) kicked a sensational snap in the opening minute to make the margin 30, and before Lucknow could even assess the damage, he had marked and converted again, and the drought was about to be broken. Jolly's four goals and truckload of possessions was enough to earn him the best-onground award from ball winners Glenane and Porter, the latter who racked up 14 disposals in the final term. Skipper Jim Reeves (four goals) made it three Bomber goals in as many minutes, receiving from Nicoll Sandison as party time began, the heat coming out of the game for the final 20 minutes. Reeves had a great battle with Stevie Bertino, who certainly wasn't disgraced. Sandison, who looked unlikely to play until late in season due to injury, started back but took some great marks in forward 50 in the final three quarters. John Gooch got one back for the Magpies, turning former Sale premiership teammate Quirk inside out, before Will Brunt took the lead out to 42 points again, the Bombers going inside 50 for the eighth time for the term while Lucknow only twice in corresponding time. Brunt was busy across half forward all day, doing a mountain of work leading up and back, while proving very handy as ruckman at boundary throws in and ball ups around the 50, allowing Wilkinson and last week's surprise inclusion Toby Leeds to play a kick behind the play. Wilkinson and Leeds nullified the work of Dion Grace and Jake Richards, who were pivotal in the semi final win a fortnight prior. The pacy Ryan Halford, who enthralled the crowd with several exciting runs throughout the match, and Nelson, who ended up forward, kicked late goals to narrow the final margin to 32 points, Nelson after a magnificent soccer volley from McAuliffe hit him flush on the chest. McAuliffe, a mid-season addition for the Magpies, entertained the crowd with his magnificent field kicking and stout defence, an indication he might have a bright future ahead if concentrates on the oval ball game. Nelson certainly wasn't as effective across half back in this match as in the previous encounter between the two sides, the Leeds inclusion one of a number of ploys used by the Bombers to stem his effectiveness. Pandemonium broke out as the final siren sounded, supporters streaking onto the ground to embrace their new heroes, who had finally broken the 23-year-old hoodoo. MAGPIES' HOT START Earlier in the match the Magpies pulled the first surprise, sending Pescod forward while it was no surprise to see big game player Porter get the first possession. The footy was hot early, as the umpires did a great job controlling the game, led by 14-yearold Josh Kool, who was joined in his first EGFNL senior grand final by Alastair Micallef and veteran David Pachl. Egan was done for the day in the first 90 seconds as Halford and Glen Perkins ran the wings, the inside 50s all Lucknow's early. If not for the good work of Leeds the damage could've been greater than just the first three goals for the Magpies. Stoppages were aplenty as Billy Marshall, Sandison and Quirk defended grimly. Gooch got the first of the game after he snatched a ball out the back from Ryan Marshall, who was none the wiser. The Lucknow bench was up and about when Daniel Johnson cleaned up McNamara, Green marking the kick and converting his first. Daniel Johnson did plenty of heavy lifting in the middle as Porter, Jolly and the fleet-footed Glenane went to work. The margin was 19 points shortly after as Lucknow's domination continued, Ryan Marshall's day getting worse when he didn't rush through a behind, only to get a bad bounce and Bayley Croucher kick a goal. Things could have been worse for Boisdale, when Logan Croucher couldn't convert from 25 metres after a throw was paid after multiple stoppages. Logan Croucher was a replacement for veteran Magpie, Brendan Flinn, who was suspended after the semi final for rough conduct. The game began to even up as the quarter progressed, late goals from Bedggood and Jolly in time on, bringing the margin back to just seven points. BOMBERS GATHER STEAM The second quarter was the most prolific of the match, with 10 goals kicked, six for the Bombers who seized the lead, and four for the Magpies, the lead changing five times before the Bombers gained ascendancy. Junior Bradshaw started the term forward for the Bombers and they were immediately rewarded with a strong mark and super finish. That was off the back of Nick Marshall missing a chance after umpire Pachl dished out consecutive 50 metre penalties. Green's second restored the lead to seven points, before Brunt found Reeves, the skipper finally on the board. Green goaled again, his goal kicking becoming a feature of the game, before Reeves again slotted it through for Boisdale after Park should have pushed it through for a point. Logan Croucher then redeemed himself, with a cool conversion, before Sandison drifted forward and made a difficult shot look easy. Jackson Smith put the Magpies back in front at the 25-minute mark, only for Reeves to strike again and put his Bombers back in the lead as the Glenane and Porter show continued to impress with poise and execution. Jolly marked on the siren, his conversion, as cool as you like, giving his side a nine-point advantage and the momentum going into the long break. That momentum proved crucial in the mindset of at least one side in the third term. Boisdale Briagolong star Tom Jolly has the crowd in the palm of his hands in an enthralling start to the final quarter of the senior East Gippsland football grand final against Lucknow at Bairnsdale City Oval. The best-on-ground medal winner kicked two goals in the opening two minutes to finish with four for the afternoon, including a pressure snap which prompted this reaction. | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 8 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 Blue beauty In an ultimate upset win, Orbost Snowy Rovers snatched premiership glory from minor premier Lucknow in the East Gippsland Football Netball League “A” grade netball grand final last Saturday at Bairnsdale City Oval. Lucknow only lost one match this season in round six to Stratford and went into the grand final as heavily backed favourites against the Blues. In the three times the two teams met in the home and away season Lucknow was victorious by four, 29 and nine goals - everything pointed to a Lucknow win. But with a strong crowd behind them, Orbost took down the Magpies by seven goals to take home the trophy comfortably. In what was a tight first quarter, both sides fought hard for control of the ball, however it was Orbost who scored first, much to the delight of its supporters. Lucknow’s quick team plays didn’t take long to kick in, with fast-moving coach Erica Lynch and Sarah Redenbach in wing attack and centre making light work of getting the ball into shooters Emma Sanford and Macy Tatnell. Orbost Snowy didn’t make it easy for the Magpies, with defenders Jorja Savory and Jewel Catlin working hard to stop those crucial passes from going in the ring. By the end of the first quarter, Lucknow had taken the lead by four goals. Some shaky shooting from Orbost early in the second quarter and strong defensive pressure from Lucknow kept the Blues at a four-goal deficit by half time, but it was the third quarter where Orbost turned the tide. With the crowd becoming increasingly excited, it didn’t take long for the Blues to level the score thanks to some excellent shooting from Karina Robinson and coach Hayley Boxall, who couldn’t seem to miss. A number of intercepts in the centre third from both sides kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, however it was Orbost who won the tussle, allowing it to forge ahead by four goals at three quarter time. Despite the pressure, the Blues held firm as the final quarter began, quickly turning over Lucknow’s mistakes with the cracks starting to show. Robinson and Boxall continued their strong work in the ring, adding 11 goals compared to Lucknow’s eight. With the clock ticking down, the Magpies refused to drop their heads as they tried to close the margin, but as the siren rang, it was Orbost who took the underdog victory. Orbost’s Jorja Savory was named best on court for her consistent work in goal defence. EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 15 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 The half time break in the reserves grand final saw a combination of senior and reserves players congregate at the huddle to listen to the inspiring words of Boisdale reserves coach, Nathan Sellings. There were plenty of Lakes Entrance supporters on hand to support the club’s “B” grade and under 17 netball sides in the grand finals, unfortunately both went down. Boisdale Briagolong assistant coach Brad Coridas was all smiles in the rooms after the match, as was eldest son, Shaquille, who despite missing the match with concussion was still rewarded a medal for his efforts at senior level throughout the season. Wy Yung “C” grade netballer Jasmine Baxter-Saunders tries to inspire her teammates to greatness, the Tigers ending up three-goal winners over Lucknow. The Pratt children were out in force barracking for Boisdale Briagolong on Saturday. Pictured are Addison, Arabella, Spencer, Arlo and Siennah and Jailyn. Unfortunately Boisdale Briagolong had all the answers and ran out 32-point winners. | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 16 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 Blues clip Cats Orbost Snowy Rovers played an inspired last term to overrun minor premier Lindenow to take the thirds grand final by eight points. The Cats began the final term as three-point leaders and with some momentum after kicking four goals to two in the vital third term. But the Blues weren't going to die wondering, with what looked like the whole town in the stands supporting them, they rallied after coughing up a half time advantage, their counterattack both exciting and enough to win the game. Kruze Farley (two goals) almost made something out of nothing early in the final term as running machines Bobby Bills and Jacob Farley continued to pump the ball inside 50. The competition's leading goalkicker, Angus Joiner, almost threaded a snap from the boundary line, cleverly evading several Cats, narrowing the margin to one point. The crowd's opinion was divided when Joiner was awarded a free kick for being held in the goal square, which the umpire adjudged correctly. Joiner converted and the Blues supporters were up and about, their enthusiasm heightening when a turnover caused by pressure across half back, saw Jacob Farley run and bounce, kicking the ball through the middle from 40 metres. Lindenow lifted its intensity, getting plenty of inside 50s, but it struggled to convert until a heavy collision between big cat Kobe Smith and Thomas Joiner saw the ball spill to Jarrell Hood (two goals) who snapped a major after missing several throughout the match, narrowing the margin to three points with seven minutes to play. But enter game breaker, Jacob Farley, who kicked a sensational goal from a clearance close to goal, sealing the match and the best-onground award. The Cats made one final tilt, Hood kicking a behind after Latrell Harrison got a free kick and a 50 metre penalty for an outstanding tackle. Players from both teams cramped in the final minutes, the toll of a tough game obvious, as the siren sounded much to the delight of the Orbost players and supporters. Earlier the match was an arm wrestle, with the first stanza only yielding a single goal, to Brayden Fenner, as the Blues led by four points at quarter time. Jacob Farley was up and about for Orbost Snowy and Jeffrey Walker Jnr strong across half back, making life difficult for the Blues forwards. Lindenow attacked numerous times, but its forwards struggled to play in front as Toby Herbert, Thomas Joiner, Finn Donnellan and Andrew Robinson defended stoutly. The second quarter saw the Blues kick a couple of goals and Lindenow one, as the margin blew out to nine points by half time. Kane Callaway was pumping the ball forward for the Cats, while Robinson was giving the Blues plenty of run and carry off half back. Linkoln McGregor kicked Orbost's first, before Hood responded, as Kruze Farley began to look more dangerous up forward, setting up Angus Joiner for his first. Lindenow coach Richard Harrison read the riot act to his troops at half time and they immediately responded, a quick Hood handball setting up skipper Ben Rutherford, who ran into the square to make a good thing of it. Titus Harrison was getting plenty of football into the forward 50 as the Cats forwards still struggled to capitalise, Smith being well held. Young Tyrone Clifford was playing a good game on the wing, keen for his second premiership of the season, while Fletcher Kleinitz and Tyson Bills were getting their hands on it for the Blues. Kruze Farley kicked his first goal mid quarter after a repeat effort from skipper Hugh Barnes, while Ned Hadden kicked one for the Cats shortly after finishing off the great work of Thomas Faithful. Faithful was again in the action a couple of minutes later, as Smith goaled after a shepherding infringement, the Cats in front and running hard, appearing to outnumber the Blues at most contests. Callaway's goal extended the lead, as Adam and Liam Irish were getting plenty of ball for the Cats, Kruze Farley's second for the morning set the game up for an exciting finale. | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 18 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 Magpies swoop on reserves flag Lucknow has overcome a semi final hiccup to run out easy 46-point winners over Boisdale Briagolong in the reserves grand final. The match was played in near-perfect conditions, in contrast to the semi final where only four goals were kicked in tricky wind-dominated weather, all by the Bombers. The Magpies were out of the blocks early, goaling in the first 55 seconds, Damian Hodder on his return from a significant hamstring injury converting after receiving a free kick 30 metres out. Hodder and full forward Shaun Ryan (four goals) caused plenty of stress for the Bomber defenders all match, but particularly in the first term where they finished off the good work of midfielders Tim Coxhill, William Siania, Jack Kennedy, Tyron Turner and James Sanford, who were active at the feet of giant ruckman Scott Joustra and his courageous opponent, Brett Hudson. Experienced Bomber Shaun Bates, who captained the club for several years, got plenty of the football early, but lacked consistent help. The first term was reserves football at its very best as the sides kicked eight goals before the match became the customary slog, with only 12 majors kicked. Ryan kicked his first at the five-minute mark, marking strongly after Kennedy ran through the middle and hit him up. Luke Pratt got the Bombers off the mark shortly after kicking truly from short range. Hodder nailed his second as Brock Smith and Josh Carroll were creating targets across half forward as part of the build up. Ryan marked strongly again and converted to make it a three-goal advantage. Bomber journeyman Josh Neille found Luke Pratt and he kicked his second to reduce the margin to 12 points. Ryan showed he was just as adept at ground level, dribbling one through thanks to some Khai Collins magic, and the margin was out to 20 points. Cal Hennig struck back for the Bombers as the siren loomed, narrowing the margin to just 14 points. Both sides showing signs of distress as they went to their respective huddles after an intense and fast-paced first term in hot conditions. Hennig's major would be the last goal for the day for the Bombers, The Magpies dominated the second term, but couldn't convert, Kennedy kicking the only major 18 minutes into the term. Boisdale Briagolong was kept scoreless as Lucknow's lead worked out to 27 points, courtesy of seven behinds, that they hoped wouldn't comeback and haunt them. Bomber designated kicker Jason Langshaw struggled to hit a target as the ball continued to comeback with interest. Daniel Gledhill Andrew Papp, Leigh Stephenson and spiritual leader Luke Belfrage were all outstanding in defence, denying the Bomber forwards, led by competition best and fairest and leading goalkicker, Danny Pratt, any space or opportunities. Pratt had a dirty day, gaining only two possessions and not troubling the scoresheet. The third quarter was played between the arcs, Lucknow adding two behinds to take their lead to 29, the Bombers still unable to get past Belfrage and his mates. Coxhill, Kennedy and Sanford racked up the disposals through the middle, while Carroll was having a field day at centre half forward. Hudson, Ben Missen, Hennig, Kaine Allen, Langshaw and Ben Bould all worked hard for the Bombers to stem the tide as the inside 50s continued to mount. Lucknow coach Chris Johnson encouraged his side to be smart with the football in the final term as with the lead they had accumulated they could afford to play the game on their terms. That's exactly what they did, kicking three goals in the first nine minutes of the final quarter to put any chance of an unlikely Bomber comeback to rest. Ryan goaled early, before Collins marked at 55, sold some candy and kicked truly from 45 metres, adding further insult to an already downcast Bomber outfit. Hodder went down with cramp, but his job was done, a successful return, the cramp justifying his non-selection in the seniors. Coxhill, who was adjudged best afield, Turner, Sanford and Carroll continued to rack up the numbers, the later kicking the final goal, as the Magpies went into party mood. Lucknow was the dominant side in the home and away season, losing only once, semi final redemption a fitting result for a near perfect season. | EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS 20 EGFNL WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 Boisdale Briagolong's "B" grade side capped off an unbeaten season last Saturday, taking down Lakes Entrance by eight goals in the grand final. The victory is also Boisdale's second in a row after defeating Stratford in the grand final last year. It was Boisdale's game from the start, scoring first and establishing a four-goal lead by quarter time. Lakes Entrance's Lucy Carroll stepped onto the court for the second time after taking on Wy Yung in the under 17s clash, working hard in goal defence. The Bombers’ strong teamwork didn't slow down as the goals kept coming, making life hard for Lakes Entrance. Emma Yates, also coming up from Lakes Entrance's under 17s side, tried to stem the bleeding as goal shooter, but it was too little too late as Boisdale extended its lead to eight by three quarter time. The margin proved to be too difficult to overcome for Lakes Entrance, with the Bombers left flying high. Boisdale Briagolong's Hannah Pratt was named best-on-court. K130 - 1266 “D” GRADE: Best-on-court: Amelia Handley, of Boisdale Briagolong. K129 - 1110 Tigers pluck victory Ladder leader Wy Yung capped off a stellar season last Saturday, taking down Lucknow in the “C” grade grand final. It was an even first quarter from both sides, with neither wanting to give up control of the ball. Excellent shooting from both the Tigers and the Magpies kept the margin even, until Lucknow eventually pulled ahead to establish a handy five-goal lead by quarter time. The lead didn’t last long for the Magpies, with the Tigers clawing back into the second quarter. Wy Yung’s strong defensive pressure in and around the ring led to forced passes from the Magpies which were easily intercepted by the Tigers’ defence. By half time, Wy Yung had not only levelled the margin, but had pulled ahead by one goal. Wy Yung’s pressure didn’t stop going into the final half as the match became more intense and physical. Despite both teams going goal-for-goal and the crowd becoming more enthusiastic, Wy Yung kept its head, maintaining its strong defensive pressure down the court and quickly converting to goals. It was Wy Yung’s consistency which kept it ahead of the game, eventually getting over the line by three goals. Wy Yung’s Caitlin Woodward was named best-on-court for her consistent work in defence. Final score: Wy Yung 36 d Lucknow 33. BOMBERS WIN “D” Boisdale Briagolong maintained its unbeaten record, coming out on top against Wy Yung by 13 goals. The Bombers came out strong from the start, scoring an impressive 12 goals in the first quarter to lead by four at the first break. It was a similar story as the second quarter began, with the Wy Yung goal shooters working hard to narrow the growing goal margin. Wy Yung’s Halle Jackson took to the court for the second time after playing in the under 17s match against Lakes Entrance, stepping into goal attack while Nikita Hayes was moved from shooting into defence. The changes did little to stop the Bomber onslaught, adding 11 goals to lead by nine at half time. Some great shooting by Wy Yung’s Alana Solomon narrowed the margin by three, but it was Boisdale Briagolong’s consistent pressure down the court which allowed the Bombers to run out 13-goal victors. Boisdale Briagolong’s Amelia Handley was named best-on-court.
