EAST GIPPSLAND NEWSPAPERS | 3 EDITION 1 - 2025 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2025 An invite to plan for the future You’re invited to start thinking about your end-of-life plans, and to come and have morning tea to learn more about how you can put things in place. Advanced care planning with Life Box is something everyone needs to consider, and it is best not to wait until a major medical event, because that medical event may be when your family and supporting medical team need to know what your wishes are. - Do you want to be resuscitated? - Do you want to live if you can’t feed yourself, talk with your friends or take care of your personal care? These are the sorts of things you need to start talking to your family about and appointing a trusted person that can advocate for you if you are unable to speak for yourself. If you haven’t had the discussion with your family or friends about what care you would like if you were to become seriously ill, then Advance Care Planning Week is the perfect time to start the conversation. Creator of Life Box Australia, Alison Miller, has worked in the funeral industry and knows all too well the stress caused by having a death in the family but no set plans in place. Sometimes there hasn’t been a discussion about what the deceased person wanted. This can cause family arguments and guilt about choosing the right or wrong option all while having to deal with the grief of losing someone. By having your advanced care plans in place, you will be giving those you leave behind the greatest gift. You will be allowing them to have peace in the knowledge that they carried out your wishes as best as they could. No guilt attached. How can Life Box help you? Having a Life Box will allow you to keep all your pre and post death documents in one place in your home. If you call an ambulance, paramedics will be alerted by a sticker on the front entrance of your home that you have a Life Box. On the fridge you will have written on a magnet where the box is kept, and they can easily ȴQG \RXU LPSRUWDQW GRFXPHQWV VXFK DV \RXU advanced care directive. Alison is available to visit retirement villages, community centres or groups and private homes to discuss the importance of advanced care planning and why every home should have a Life Box. Meet Alison on March 22 at 10.30am at room 13 at The Hub in Bairnsdale and enjoy morning tea while she shares with you information about advanced care planning and why having a Life Box is important. Kaye receives a level three home care package and opts to receive support including home nursing visits, access to an osteo, showering support, help with laundry, home cleaning, gardening, access to physiotherapy and help with meals. “It can help you live independently, and also live as you wish to live,” she said. “They’ve given us our independence and enriched our lives.” 7KH ȴUVW VWHS WR DFFHVVLQJ VXSSRUW LV WR register for My Aged Care. 7KHUH DUH GLHUHQW SDWKZD\V WR DFFHVVLQJ support to remain living at home like the Commonwealth Home Support Program or home care packages. “I’m very grateful for the way in which the KRPH FDUH SDFNDJH VHUYLFH LV RHUHG We have a case manager with whom we can relate and who often anticipates our own needs,” Kaye said.
