East Gippsland Newspapers 2 EDITION 2 - 2025 Wednesday, September 24, 2025 Sing it loud with a local choir We feel it and science tells us, that music, whether singing (solo or in a choir), playing an instrument or as a member of a concert audience, offers benefits far beyond simple enjoyment. Music generates a sense of wellbeing and togetherness among people of all ages as well as reducing stress and even improving memory. Singing in a choir is perhaps at the top of the list of positive ways to include music in your life. Gippsland has several active choirs, some of which are keen to welcome new participants. LEGGS – Lakes Entrance Gippsland Girl Singers This women's choir, based in Lakes Entrance, is well-known for their performances and community involvement, including regular concerts for charity. They often incorporate audience participation and feature local musicians in their shows. They perform a variety of music, including wellknown songs from different eras. This was evident in their November 2024 concert A Trip Down Memory Lane, which featured songs from the 1940s to the 1980s. The Bairnsdale Vanuatu Workers Alliance Chorus (VWAC) participated in the annual Choir Festival at St Mary's in Bairnsdale in May 2025. VWAC members are all from the same island of Lelepa, north of Port Vila in Vanuatu. They typically sing hymns, but as you might expect they are in full flight when they sing songs from their own culture. Rehearsals: Very likely as they work together picking fruit or vegetables in Gippsland, Victoria. Contact: Search online Harmony Scholars Choir With about a dozen choir members, the Harmony Scholars Choir has a repertoire of country folk songs which they generously and energetically share with audiences in residential old age homes or community halls around Gippsland. An audience of more than 100 people sang, laughed and clapped along on Tuesday, July 8 this year when 40 members of the Harmony Scholars choir held their Country Folk concert at the Picnic Point Hall. The stage had a large banner backdrop of a country scene and red and white bunting was strung across the hall; hay bales and a saddle rounded out the welcome to residents from local aged care homes, and friends and relatives of choir members. A large screen enabled the audience to sing along with the choir to 24 country folk songs such as G'day, G'day; Don't Fence Me In; Country Roads; Sweet Violets; Jambalaya; and When You're Smiling. This latest Harmony Scholars concert included a recently formed Gum Boot Band, with choir members using a drum, washboard, shakers, sticks and a lagerphone which entered the fray for the first bracket of songs. Ginny Vincent conducted the choir, and choir members Mark Dale, Faye Betts, Diana Auld, Maureen Symmonds, Ineke Child, Suzi Roberts, Robert and Gill Morpeth, Ann Sims, Rob Eldridge, Darell Brew, Gayle English, Flora Russell and Bridie Christie provided solo, duet and trio items. A mini piano duet by Leonie Love and Lyn Winnett from the William Tell Overture surprised both the choir and the audience. The concert was followed by a delicious afternoon tea. Singing in a choir is a great way to integrate music into your life. There are a number of choirs in the area that are looking for new members. East Gippsland Newspapers 3 EDITION 2 - 2025 Wednesday, September 24, 2025 Smile your brightest For most, a passion for dentures might seem unusual, but for local dental prosthetist Geoffrey C Dennis, it was practically a birthright. With a career spanning more than 40 years, his expertise is built on a lifetime of immersion in the world of dental prosthetics. Mr Dennis's unique journey began in the academic halls of the University of Melbourne Dental School, where his father was the senior lecturer in prosthetics for his entire working life. Growing up surrounded by the craft, it was a natural progression for the trade to be passed from father to son. A long-time advocate for rural communities, Mr Dennis has been practicing in regional Victoria for four decades, eventually opening his Bairnsdale clinic on Main Street in 2006 to serve the East Gippsland community. "Keen on farming and community development, I have practiced in rural Victoria since 1980," Mr Dennis said. Today, he offers a platinum service to his clients from his offices in Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance, providing custom-made partial and full dentures. He prides himself on tailoring the service to accommodate the needs of his patrons, many of whom travel significant distances. "I've got people from all over Victoria," he said. "I try and accommodate everyone as best I can, so when I have clients coming down from far away, we can schedule it so we get all the work done in one day, just to make it a bit easier on them." With a significant portion of the local population entering their senior years — the average age for new dentures being 55 — Mr Dennis understands the profound impact his work has on people's lives. "Once your mouth's all messed up, you lose confidence," he said. "It's about getting a client's smile back." He describes his work as both a science and an art, requiring immense precision and a creative touch. "It's creative work, so it's exciting to make dentures to fit an individual mouth. I love to see what we've created — it's very satisfying." Working closely with local dental surgeries, Mr Dennis prides himself on making his artificial replacements as much like the real thing as possible. He sources a range of high-quality artificial teeth from around the world and utilises a variety of soft materials to ensure extra comfort and a perfect fit for every individual. Art and craft vital for well-being East Gippsland with its inspiring natural beauty, provides the perfect backdrop for fostering creativity in its senior citizens. Engaging in art and craft activities offers a wealth of benefits, contributing significantly to the physical, mental and emotional well-being of older adults. Art and craft groups provide a vital social outlet, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Participating in these activities allows seniors to connect with like-minded individuals, share experiences and build lasting friendships. Engaging in creative pursuits stimulates the brain, improving memory, concentration and problem-solving skills. Activities like painting, drawing and crafting require focus and attention, helping to maintain cognitive function. Arts and crafts provide a powerful outlet for self-expression, allowing seniors to process emotions and reduce stress. The act of creating can be therapeutic, fostering a sense of accomplishment and boosting self-esteem. Many craft activities, such as knitting, pottery and painting involve fine motor skills, which help to maintain dexterity and hand-eye coordination. This is particularly important for seniors as it can help them maintain independence in daily tasks. Traditional crafts, like those often practiced in groups such as the CWA, offer a valuable opportunity to preserve and pass on cultural heritage. This connection to the past can provide a sense of identity and purpose. East Gippsland boasts a vibrant arts community, with numerous local art groups and workshops offering a variety of creative opportunities for seniors. Many community centres and libraries across the region host art and craft sessions, providing accessible and affordable opportunities for seniors to engage in creative activities. The East Gippsland Art Gallery is a fantastic hub that provides exhibitions, and sometimes workshops that can be very beneficial to all people, including seniors. Engaging in creative pursuits, such as crafting, painting and drawing, stimulates the brain and improves memory, concentration and problem-solving skills. 1800 601 020 Enquire Today NOW OFFERING AGED CARE SERVICES Through our partnership with aged care package provider Trilogy Care 5152 6896 | BAIRNSDALE & LAKES ENTRANCE Complete Denture Services Full and Partial Dentures | Repairs and Relines | Implant-Supported Options Whether you’re after a brand-new set or need expert repairs, our experienced team delivers comfort, confidence, and care—with every smile. East Gippsland Newspapers 4 Keeping eyes healthy at Specsavers Bairnsdale EDITION 2 - 2025 Wednesday, September 24, 2025 The key to living longer Living a long and healthy life is a goal shared by many, and Australia, with its high quality of life, offers a favourable environment. Here's a breakdown of key statistics and factors that contribute to longevity and well-being in Australia: LIFE EXPECTANCY Australia consistently ranks among the countries with the highest life expectancies in the world. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), recent data shows life expectancy at birth to be around 81.1 years for males and 85.1 years for females. However, a significant gap exists between the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-indigenous Australians. Life expectancy can vary across different regions, with those living in remote areas often experiencing lower life expectancies, while socioeconomic factors also play a large role. HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential. Physical activity: Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health and overall well-being. Avoiding harmful habits: Limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking are vital. ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE Australia's robust healthcare system provides access to quality medical care, contributing to early detection and treatment of diseases. Preventative medicine such as cancer screenings and regular check ups are very important. Recognising and addressing mental health concerns is increasingly important. Access to mental health services and support networks plays a significant role in overall well-being. Australia generally enjoys clean air and water, although climate change is posing increasing challenges. Maintaining a healthy environment is crucial for long-term health. KEY STATISTICS AND INSIGHTS Chronic diseases: Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are major causes of death in Australia. Health-Adjusted Life Expectancy (HALE): This metric measures the number of years a person can expect to live in good health. It provides a more comprehensive picture of well-being than life expectancy alone. It is important to remember that although Australia has a very high average life expectancy, that there are large disparities between different groups of people within Australia. By focusing on healthy lifestyle choices, accessing quality healthcare, and prioritising mental well-being, Australians can increase their chances of living longer, healthier lives. Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows life expectancy at birth to be around 81.1 years for males and 85.1 years for females. East Gippsland Newspapers 6 EDITION 2 - 2025 Wednesday, September 24, 2025 Tips for healthy and radiant skin As we age, our skin undergoes natural changes, including thinning, increased dryness and reduced elasticity. For those over 70, maintaining a proper skincare routine can help keep the skin healthy, hydrated and comfortable. Here are some essential steps to follow: 1. Gentle cleansing Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser that won't strip the skin of its natural oils. Avoid harsh soaps, as they can cause excessive dryness. Instead, opt for a hydrating cream or oil-based cleanser. 2. Daily moisturising A rich, nourishing moisturiser is key to keeping skin soft and preventing dryness. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides, which help retain moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. 3. Sun protection Even at 70+, protecting the skin from UV damage is essential. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days. Wearing protective clothing and a hat can also help prevent sunspots and further skin thinning. 4. Hydration from within Drinking plenty of water supports skin hydration from the inside. Herbal teas and water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables can also help keep skin supple. 5. Gentle exfoliation Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, but it should be done sparingly. Use a mild exfoliant, such as a soft washcloth or a gentle enzyme-based formula, once or twice a week to promote skin renewal without irritation. 6. Targeted skincare If you have concerns such as fine lines, age spots, or redness, consider using serums or creams with ingredients like vitamin C, peptides, or niacinamide. Consult a dermatologist for recommendations suited to your skin type. 7. Avoiding harsh products Stay away from products with alcohol, strong fragrances and harsh chemicals, as they can irritate mature skin. Stick to gentle, dermatologist-approved formulas. 8. Nighttime skincare Applying a thicker night cream before bed helps repair and nourish the skin overnight. If needed, use a hydrating eye cream to reduce puffiness and fine lines around the eyes. 9. Prioritising overall health Healthy skin starts with a balanced lifestyle. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants, getting enough sleep and managing stress all contribute to maintaining a youthful glow. 10. Regular skin checkups As skin becomes more delicate with age, regular checkups with a dermatologist can help monitor any changes, including new growths or changes in moles, which could indicate skin conditions that need medical attention. By following these simple steps, people over 70 can keep their skin healthy, hydrated and radiant for years to come. The key is to be gentle, stay moisturised and protect your skin from the elements. East Gippsland Newspapers 10 EDITION 2 - 2025 Wednesday, September 24, 2025 Plan the perfect cruise holiday As the chill of winter fades, many Victorians are dreaming of a getaway. If you've never considered a holiday on a ship, now might be the perfect time to explore the ease and excitement of an ocean cruise, whether you're traveling solo, with a partner, or with family. With a major cruise terminal right on our doorstep, a world of destinations is just a short walk up a gangway in Melbourne. You can set sail: - Across the Tasman to explore New Zealand's stunning glaciers, mountains, and rainforests. - North along the east coast to Sydney and Brisbane. - South to Tasmania, with stops in Hobart, Port Arthur, and Burnie. - West along the southern coast to discover Adelaide, Port Lincoln, and Kangaroo Island. But with so many options, how do you choose the right voyage? This guide will help you navigate the planning process to find your perfect cruise. Key questions to ask before you book Using New Zealand as an example, here are five essential things to consider: 1. What is your budget? Determine your price range, including fares, on-board spending, and shore excursions. 2. Where exactly do you want to go? Do you prefer a round-trip from Melbourne, a one-way journey, or a cruise that focuses intensively on the New Zealand coast? 3. What's your preferred ship size? As a rule, smaller ships can access harder-to-reach ports, while larger ships offer more on-board activities and amenities. 4. What's available on-board? Research the activities, dining options, and entertainment to ensure they match your interests. 5. Have you checked reviews? Look up recent customer feedback on specific ships and cruise lines to get an unbiased perspective. Matching a cruise to your travel style The best cruise for you depends on the experience you're looking for. - For romance and luxury: For an intimate and high-end experience, consider small-ship lines like Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Seabourn. Princess Cruises and Holland America are also known for their destination-focused luxury voyages. - For a premium experience: Lines like Princess Cruises, Holland America, and Oceania Cruises strike a balance between luxury and value, focusing on great food and destination-rich itineraries. - For family-focused fun: If you're traveling with children, look to Carnival Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean. P&O's Pacific Explorer is another excellent choice, offering water parks, rock climbing, and dive-in movies to keep everyone entertained. - For immersive local experiences: To explore smaller, unique ports, expedition lines like Lindblad or Coral Expeditions are a great choice. P&O Cruises also offers itineraries focused on local discovery. Practical tips for a perfect trip When to travel: The main cruise season for New Zealand runs during the warmer months from October to March. While you can find great deals during the hurricane season (June to November), be aware of the risk of itinerary changes. The best weather is often found in April-May or October. Best for seniors: For those seeking a relaxed and enriching atmosphere, cruise lines like Viking, Holland America, Silversea, and Cunard are highly recommended for senior travelers, whether celebrating retirement or taking a solo trip. Finding a last-minute deal: As any seasoned traveler knows, patience can pay off. Cruise lines often drop prices or offer free add-ons to fill ships as the departure date nears. Keep an eye out for deals within 60 to 90 days of sailing, particularly after final payment deadlines have passed. Tow your caravan safely Whether you're heading off on your big lap or just planning a few weeks away over summer, now's the time to check whether your towing setup is actually within legal limits. Tony, a local small business owner based in Bairnsdale, runs RV Weight Check — a mobile weighing service that helps people understand what their vehicle and caravan are really doing on the road. "The weigh takes a couple of hours, and we organise a convenient location that works for both of us," Tony said. "I'm based in Bairnsdale, so I focus on East Gippsland and the surrounding areas — local service for local travellers." Many people are shocked to learn they're overloaded or out of balance, even when everything feels fine. But guesswork won't protect you from fines, insurance issues, or a loss of control at 100km/h. RV Weight Check provides accurate, detailed readings of: - Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) – the max legal weight of your tow vehicle - Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) – the max loaded weight of your van - Gross Combination Mass (GCM) – the total of car and van -Tow Ball Weight – how much weight is pressing down on the tow ball - Axle Loads – front and rear, for both vehicle and caravan "It's a great check-in before the holiday season," Tony said. "We give people a really RV Weight Check brings the scales to you so you can weight your vehicles before hitting the road. (PS) clear snapshot of where they sit — and explain how it relates to what their setup can legally tow." While your setup might be compliant on the day of the weigh, that doesn't mean it'll stay that way once you fill the fridge, load the bikes, or change vans down the track. "We always remind people: a weigh is just a snapshot. It's compliant on the day — but what it really gives you is guidance. You learn what to watch for, how your weights change, and where you're at with your current rig." There's no one-size-fitsall advice when it comes to towing. Different vehicles, different trailers, different driving habits. That's why a personalised weigh is so useful — it's tailored to your setup. With summer holidays around the corner, now is the perfect time to get peace of mind. East Gippsland Newspapers 11 EDITION 2 - 2025 Wednesday, September 24, 2025 Nourishing the golden years As Australians live longer and more active lives than ever before, understanding the role of nutrition in maintaining health, energy and independence in the senior years has become critically important. For those aged between 60 and 90, dietary needs shift and focusing on the right foods can make a profound difference in quality of life, from strengthening bones to boosting brain function. While the fundamentals of a healthy diet remain the same, ageing bodies have specific requirements. Metabolism slows, the ability to absorb certain nutrients can decrease, and the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, osteoporosis, and type two diabetes increases. A targeted, nutrient-dense diet is the most powerful tool to combat these challenges. Based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines and advice from dieticians, here is a guide to optimal nutrition for seniors. 1. Protein for strength: As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, a condition known as sarcopenia, which can lead to frailty and falls. A protein-rich diet is essential to preserve and rebuild muscle. What to eat: Aim to include a source of protein in every meal. Excellent options include lean meats (chicken, beef), fish (especially oily fish like salmon), eggs, dairy products (milk, yoghurt, cheese), legumes, beans, tofu, and nuts. 2. Calcium and Vitamin D for bone health: Osteoporosis is a major concern for older Australians, making bones brittle and prone to fracture. This duo is the best defence. Calcium is the building block of bone, and Vitamin D is needed to absorb it effectively. What to eat and do: Dairy products are a prime source of calcium. Choose low-fat milk, yoghurt, and cheese. Other sources include fortified plantbased milks (soy, almond), tinned fish with edible bones (sardines, salmon), tofu, and dark leafy greens. For Vitamin D, sensible sun exposure is the best source, though it's also found in fatty fish, eggs, and fortified foods. Fibre for Digestive Health: A healthy digestive system is crucial for overall wellbeing. Fibre prevents constipation—a common issue for seniors—helps manage blood sugar levels, and lowers cholesterol. What to eat: Focus on wholegrain breads and cereals, oats, brown rice, quinoa, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Vitamin B12 for Brain and Nerve Function: The body's ability to absorb Vitamin B12 from food can decline with age. A deficiency can lead to fatigue, nerve problems, and cognitive issues. What to eat: B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products. Include lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy in your diet. Some breakfast cereals are also fortified with B12. Healthy Fats for Heart and Brain: Not all fats are bad. Unsaturated fats, particularly Omega-3s, are vital for reducing inflammation and supporting cardiovascular and brain health. What to eat: Incorporate avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and oily fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines into your weekly meals. Don't Forget to Drink Up: The Crucial Role of Hydration Dehydration is a serious and common risk for seniors, as the sense of thirst can diminish with age. It can lead to confusion, constipation, and urinary tract infections. What to drink: Water is the best choice. Aim for 6-8 glasses a day. Milk, soup, and herbal teas also contribute to your daily fluid intake. Making it Work: Practical Tips for Success Smaller, Frequent Meals: If you have a small appetite, try eating five or six smaller, nutrient-dense meals throughout the day instead of three large ones. Softer Options: For those with dental or chewing difficulties, choose softer foods like stews, soups, minced meat, cooked vegetables, and smoothies. The Social Side of Food: Eating is a social activity. Whenever possible, share meals with family or friends, or join a local community lunch group to make mealtimes more enjoyable. Limit Processed Foods: Reduce your intake of foods high in salt, added sugar, and saturated fat, such as pastries, fried foods, sugary drinks, and processed meats. These offer little nutritional value and can contribute to high blood pressure and other health issues. A personalised approach is always best. Seniors, especially those with pre-existing health conditions or on multiple medications, are encouraged to speak with their GP or an Accredited Practising Dietitian to create a tailored eating plan that meets their individual needs. Friendship and fun at KeenAgers For almost a quarter of a century, the Bairnsdale KeenAgers Table Tennis program has been a cornerstone of community, activity and friendship for local seniors. What began in November 2001 as a health-focused initiative is now a thriving, self-sustaining social hub that continues to prove the value of connection. The program's origins trace back to a grant from Vic Health, under its "active for life" program, in partnership with Table Tennis Victoria. This initial sponsorship was designed to encourage older residents to stay active. While the funding has long since ended, the spirit of the program has only grown stronger, with Monday and Thursday morning sessions remaining a much-anticipated fixture. From the beginning, the KeenAgers' philosophy was about more than just sport. The primary goal has always been to get people out of the house and involved in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Table tennis simply provides the perfect, low-impact vehicle for this social interaction. The group proudly caters to all standards, from complete beginners to seasoned experts, and accommodates all levels of mobility in a non-competitive setting. While strong friendships are forged across the table tennis table, it's during the halftime cuppa that the program's true magic happens, as members gather to chat, laugh, and solve the world's problems. Over the years, the KeenAgers' community focus has expanded. While their main interest remains table tennis for older people, they have also fostered the game for people with disabilities, holding weekly in-house sessions and assisting members with participation in regional and state tournaments. Now based at the Bairnsdale Squash and Table Tennis Centre, the Bairnsdale KeenAgers continue to offer excellent facilities and a warm welcome to anyone looking to get active, meet new people, and enjoy the fun and friendship that has defined the group for nearly 24 years.
