Gippsland Monash Rural Health medical students participated in a two-day paediatric surgery workshop, delivered in Bairnsdale by the Monash Children’s Hospital Paediatric Surgical team.

Mr Chris Kimber, Associate Professor and consultant paediatric urologist, Mr Ram Nataraja, consultant paediatric surgeon, director of surgical simulation, Mr Maurizio Pacilli, consultant paediatric surgeon, Mr Bob Homapour consultant neurosurgeon, and Dr Mithila Sivasubramaniam, simulation fellow, together with Nicole Bate, from Monash Children’s Hospital, travelled to Bairnsdale to provide tutorials and simulation activities on topics essential to the year four medical student’s learning.

Paediatrics is a curriculum speciality medical students undertake in year four.

Students were immersed in simulated learning activities including paediatric trauma, neurological procedure scenarios and core laparoscopic skill tasks using laparoscopic bench trainers.

Skills learnt set the foundation for further paediatric learning in addition to gaining an insight to the speciality of paediatric surgery.

All students were grateful to the paediatric surgery team for travelling to Bairnsdale and delivering this excellent learning opportunity.

In addition to the two days’ workshop at Monash Rural Health site in Bairnsdale, the paediatric surgical team held an evening workshop for the local general practitioners of an overview of Monash Children’s Health Neurosurgery and feedback techniques, which was well received.
