The extension of Giles Street, Bairnsdale, is well underway with works on schedule.

Most recently, the bridge’s final beams were lowered into place.

The project, which includes construction of a three-span steel and reinforced concrete bridge over McGees Gully, is a major construction project for East Gippsland Shire Council.

The bridge and associated road extension will link the Giles Street and Saleyards Road industrial areas. The infrastructure is being built on the unmade section of road.

Since work began in January 2018, the bridge’s abutments, piers, crossheads and beams have been installed. Drainage on the eastern section of road is also complete and safety barriers have been installed.

Work on the $2.46 million project, due to be completed in February 2019, is being undertaken by council’s contractor, Tambo Constructions.

Mayor, Cr Joe Rettino, said the bridge will provide a more direct route for heavy vehicles and people working and visiting the businesses in the industrial estates.

“Council manages 209 bridges throughout the shire. This new bridge and road extension is much- anticipated by the business community and heavy vehicle operators,” Cr Rettino said.

“The next major milestone for this project will be pouring the deck, which is expected to occur in coming weeks.”

The Australian Government has committed $588,500 towards the Giles Street Extension project under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program. Council is funding the remainder through its Capital Works Program.
