Morwell’s Magic men proved too good for the Bairnsdale Bullets in round four of the Gippsland Country Basketball League last Sunday at the Latrobe Leisure Centre.
The Bullets found the size and shooting prowess of the talented Magic a task too great succumbing, 91-64.
Despite the loss there were still plenty of positives for the young Bairnsdale side who showed in a recent win over the Sale Sonics that they are an emerging outfit, who will get better as the season progresses and be even better in 12 to 24 months’ time.
Morwell got on roll early as William Tankard (21 points), Dejay Ansell (14), Jordan Canovan (14), Lachlan Tankard (10) and Mitchell Brueton (10) scored with relative ease, opening up a 10-point lead by quarter.
The second quarter was a similar scenario as Bayley Croucher (16), Stephen Savige (14), Ryan Hargreaves (13) and Jake DeDonato (10) continued to try and keep the score ticking over to stay in touch with the rampant Magic.
The margin had blown out to 24 points by half time, but to the Bullets’ credit they played their best basketball in the second half, even outscoring Morwell by three points in an action-packed final stanza of free-flowing basketball which seemed to suit the short Bairnsdale line up.
The side’s traded baskets and gave coach Eric Cerda and his players some renewed energy ahead of the next game.
Bairnsdale’s next home game is at the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre this Saturday night when it takes on the Wonthaggi Coasters at 5pm.
Wonthaggi is yet to win a match this season and it presents a great opportunity for the Bullets to breakthrough for their second victory.
