Mosquitoes are back with renewed vigour following the recent wet weather in East Gippsland.
The Victorian Department of Health has confirmed it has stepped up mosquito surveillance activity, such as trapping, earlier than usual this year.
A spokesperson for the department said people in areas experiencing mosquito activity are recommended “to undertake protective measures now and over the coming months to protect themselves against mosquito bites and mosquito-borne diseases”.
“Protective measures to avoid mosquito bites, include wearing long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, using personal insect repellents, emptying containers holding water regularly, and avoiding mosquito-prone areas, especially at dusk and dawn,” the spokesperson said.
The importance of removing mosquito breeding habitats from around the home cannot be underestimated.
Stagnant water is both an attraction and a breeding source for the biting insects.
The most effective way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases is to prevent getting bitten in the first instance.
At home, using personal insect repellents that contain diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin is a deterrent.
