It’s no secret there is a local housing crisis.
The provision of affordable social housing in East Gippsland has failed to keep up with demand. Consequently, vulnerable individuals across all abilities, socio-economic and age groups are experiencing inappropriate housing conditions, overcrowding and homelessness. Some of those affected also face additional hardships, such as cost of living pressures, domestic violence situations and mental health challenges.
With winter now here, Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Sunrise has donated $2000 towards supporting St Vincent de Paul Assistance Centre, Bairnsdale, to purchase much-needed supplies for the homeless. While the donation is not a solution to the housing crisis, it will help to provide temporary shelter and warmth for vulnerable members of the community.
“St Vincent de Paul Bairnsdale is so grateful to Sunrise Rotary for helping us support the vulnerable members of our East Gippsland community,” Trish Veevers, president St Vincent de Paul Bairnsdale, said.
“Through their generosity we have been able to purchase tents, ground mats, stoves and warm coats.
“We are aware of the many people sleeping rough in East Gippsland, whether it be by the river, the sale yards, the dunes at the beach and many public toilet blocks. These people deserve our support and care. Homelessness is a community problem, and it requires a community solution.”
