Local cricketing prodigy Cameron White has been appointed coach of the Melbourne Renegades men’s program for the next three years.
White was part of the Renegades 2018/2019 title winning Big Bash League campaign as a player and replaces the highly-rated David Saker who was sacked after two years at the helm.
The former Victorian and Renegades captain retired from competitive cricket in 2020 and has spent the past two seasons working with former coach Greg Shipperd at NSW and the Sydney Sixers, after a stint at the Adelaide Strikers.
A natural leader with an outstanding cricket brain, White represented Victoria 286 times across all three formats, winning six Sheffield Shield, a One-Day Cup and two state Twenty20 Big Bash titles.
White inherits a Renegades group with enormous potential but has struggled to string consistent performances together.
It includes the next big thing in world cricket, the excitement machine that is Jake Fraser-McGurk, who will be coming off a breakout season in the Indian Premier League, who will likely partner new recruit Josh Brown at the top of the order.
The bowling looks strong with Australian spinners Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon on the list alongside veteran quick Kane Richardson and Tom Rogers.
White, who racked up more than 3200 runs for Australia in 142 appearances across all three formats, will be supported by another Big Bash-winning coach, Wade Seccombe, who was recently appointed the club’s T20 high performance manager after resigning from his Queensland and Brisbane Heat roles in March.
Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said White stood out from a field of applicants across the globe.
“His vision for the club and this playing group, combined with his knowledge of the game, particularly T20 cricket, is also undisputed. We’re excited about what Cam will bring,” Rosengarten said.
White’s first job will be to decide what overseas recruits the club will use in upcoming Big Bash season.
