Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC) is calling on the local community to join its vibrant team of volunteers for race management.
Whether you’re an active sailor or someone who simply loves the water, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved, learn new skills, and contribute to the sailing community.
Why volunteer?
Volunteering at GLYC is more than just a role; it’s a chance to be part of a community that values teamwork, learning, and camaraderie.
By volunteering, you can:
– Learn new skills: All volunteers receive comprehensive training in race management tasks, ensuring you are well-prepared and confident in your role.
– Meet new people: Volunteering brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering new friendships and social interactions.
– Give back to the community: Your contribution helps maintain the high standards of our sailing events and supports the local sailing community.
There are several exciting roles available for volunteers, including:
– Start boat crew: Assist in getting races underway and recording finishes.
– Course laying boat crew: Help lay buoys and monitor yachts as they navigate the course.
– Rib boat crew: Ensure the safety of the racing fleet and provide assistance to any boats in need.
You do not need to be a member of the yacht club to volunteer. The club welcomes anyone who is enthusiastic about sailing and willing to lend a hand. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or new to the sport, there’s a place for you at GLYC.
The volunteer roster for race management is now managed by the sailing sub-committee, with Taj Duff and Louise South coordinating the schedule for Sunday races. All active sailing members will be allocated a date on the sailing calendar to participate in race management.
However, the club is also keen to recruit volunteers from outside the club who wish to stay engaged with the sailing community.
To join the team, simply reach out to the sailing sub-committee. You’ll be paired with experienced volunteers who will guide you through the tasks and ensure you feel comfortable and supported.
Volunteering with GLYC is a wonderful way to enjoy the stunning Gippsland Lakes. Imagine spending your Sundays out on the water, contributing to the smooth running of our races, and soaking in the beautiful scenery. It’s an experience that combines the thrill of sailing with the joy of community service.
