Malcolm Mathieson’s final exhibition before embarking on an extended overseas journey, where he will document the lives of the Rohingya people in Southeast Asia and later pursue various projects in Europe, is currently on display.
This exhibition showcases the artists who supply their work to The Foundry in Bairnsdale. Malcolm personally visited each artist in their studio to capture their creative process within their own space.
The Foundry, an artist co-operative and retail store, offers a wide range of handmade and sustainable products. These include hand-formed sterling silver jewellery, original illustrations, paintings, prints, locally sourced vintage clothing made from natural fibres, bespoke homewares, eco-friendly products such as beeswax wraps and bamboo crocheted washcloths, high-quality ceramics, and handmade children’s toys.
Since opening in mid-2014, The Foundry has remained somewhat of a hidden gem, tucked away down a small laneway behind Paper Chase Café at 168 Main Street, Bairnsdale.
Despite Malcolm having exhibited over 20 shows there and its close proximity to Nicholson Street, many locals remain unaware of the treasures inside.
The cooperative hosts about 65 local creatives, showcasing their diverse talents.
The most important aspect of The Foundry is that every purchase directly supports local artists, grassroots businesses, and a unique vision of creative, self-sustaining economics.
It’s a place where passion and skill are celebrated, and where supporting the arts is a radical act of community empowerment.
