Concern over the future of Nich-olson Street in Bairnsdale has resulted in East Gippsland Shire Council voting to reinstate at least six car parking spaces that were removed during the street upgrade.
However, Cr Trevor Stow said he would be disappointed if "we can't get 10 parking spaces back there".
The nine member council con-sidered a report prepared by shire officers at last week's meeting which highlights overall concern for Nichol-son Street.
The report contends "the econom-ic vitality of the Nicholson Street precinct is acknowledged to have declined", a fact many believe can be attributed to Woolworths relocating from the mall to the former Kmart building.
It further states: "there is a need to work on economic initiatives that will support its re-establishment as an im-portant CBD precinct".
General manager of assets and environment, Fiona Weigall, told the meeting the movement of main anchor tenants, namely Woolworths, Target and soon - KHub, out of the main Nicholson Street precinct had changed the area.
Ms Weigall suggested it would be worthwhile to look at what design might work "to respond to those changes in the precinct".
