Lakes Entrance 2018 best and fairest, Alex Saunders, shone for the under 25 Tasmania Devils during their 36-point win over Victoria Metro at Launceston last Saturday.

Saunders, 23, helped lead the Seagulls to the East Gippsland football grand final last year and is already making his mark at Tasmanian State League level.

Against some of the best Victorian metro footballers, Saunders had an immediate impact and bagged three goals. In the final seconds of the first term Saunders slotted his first from a snap 35m out straight in front cutting Victoria’s lead to three points.

The Devils’ lead continued to build as the match wore on with Saunders kicking two final quarter goals, one from a set shot in the first minute from 10m out on a slight angle and another 12 minutes later 45m out on a 45 degree angle.

Saunders made the move to Tasmania in the off-season, joining up with Lauderdale Football Club, south-east of Hobart, where he has enjoyed a fine first half of the season.

Saunders has kicked seven goals in nine games as a midfielder/forward, and has been named among his side’s best players twice as the Bombers sit atop the league ladder with eight wins and one loss at the halfway mark of the season.

The gifted talent, known for his swift footwork, crisp left foot and high flying, claimed mark of the round against Glenorchy on May 11 (see the league’s Facebook page).
