Local football coach Shaun Mooney has been appointed AFL Victoria Coach Developer for East Gippsland.
AFL Gippsland were thrilled to announce the appointment of Mooney earlier this week, effective immediately.
The appointment underscores AFL Gippsland’s commitment to enhancing coaching standards and supporting the development of local talent within the region.
Mooney brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in coaching development to the role.
He will be responsible for providing dedicated support, mentoring, and resources to junior and senior club coaches across East Gippsland, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
AFL Gippsland general manager Tim Cotter is delighted to have got his man.
“Shaun’s expertise and passion for coaching development will be invaluable in empowering our local coaches and ensuring the continued growth of the game in East Gippsland,” Cotter said.
Mooney’s appointment is part of AFL Gippsland’s broader initiative to provide comprehensive coaching support for the 2025 season.
AFL Gippsland is dedicated to investing in the development of its coaches, recognising their crucial role in nurturing the next generation of footballers.
A junior coaching induction course is being held at Bairnsdale City Oval on Monday from 6pm.
The session will cover the role of the coach, coaching at training and in games, as well as the fun practical element.
League specific junior rules will be distributed alongside an introduction to the AFL’s National Junior Rules, while getting the chance to hear about the AFL’s new coaching accreditation framework and earn points simply by attending the session.
For the 2025 season, AFL Gippsland will have four dedicated and experienced coach developers available to provide advice, mentoring and support to local junior and senior club coaching teams. These developers will work closely with clubs to implement best practices, enhance coaching strategies, and create positive learning environments for players of all ages.
“We believe that investing in our coaches is an investment in the future of our game,” Cotter said.
“By providing dedicated support and resources, we are empowering our coaches to make a real difference in the lives of young athletes and contribute to the vibrant football community in Gippsland.”
