A crane driver was lucky to escape serious injury after his machine left Forge Creek Road in Bairnsdale and ploughed down an embankment on Tuesday morning.
The local man, in his 30s, was driving the articulated crane truck toward Paynesville, just after 7.30, when it has apparently swerved to the opposite side of the road and then back across the bitumen before plunging down the embankment.
According to emergency authorities, the crane flipped over as it skid across the bitumen.
The man was taken to hospital as a precaution but was later released.
Forge Creek Road, near Racecourse Road, was closed for several hours on Tuesday as attempts were made to lift the crane from the bottom of the embankment.
