The Paynesville Foreshore Fireworks have all but been locked in for New Year’s Eve.
Formed nine days ago, Paynesville Community Events has taken it upon itself to hold the annual fireworks display after the Paynesville Lions Club chose not to place its fundraising efforts in that direction.
The Lions Club usually raises money for the event, however instead chose to donate its money to support East Gippsland farmers facing difficult times in drought.
Paynesville Community Events president, Simon Ellis, says the fireworks play an important role for the Paynesville community and is pleased to ensure they will once again take place.
“The annual fireworks display is more than just a feel-good community event,” Mr Ellis said.
“For many Paynesville businesses this is the largest trading day of the year and a major tourism marketing event for the entire town.
“Losing our New Year’s event could have a devastating effect on our region.”
Paynesville Community Events is raising funds through its GoFundMe page and on Wednesday morning it had already received $3800 of donations along with $10,000 worth of pledges. Within the first three days $1800 was raised.
The goal is $12,000 and Paynesville Community Events needs help to make this event happen.
“The permits, permissions and all the bookings are in place, but we need your support as traders to get it off the ground,” Mr Ellis said.
“The majority of tourists come to Paynesville for the family event and we want to keep that tradition going.
“We’ve worked out that if 3000 plus people in Paynesville all gave $5 we would not only be able to run this year’s event but also start planning for next year’s event.
“We want everyone in the community to be able to be involved in this fantastic idea.”
There will be live music performed by Jam821 for everyone to get into the festive spirit, kicking off at 6pm.
There will also be food vans, market stalls and jumping castles for the children to enjoy.
The fireworks will commence at 10pm.
Paynesville Lions Club president, Stuart Chapman, said the Lions wouldn’t be involved this year, but aren’t ruling out a return in the future.
This is a no alcohol, no dog and no sparklers event.
