Pam Peppler will soon travel to Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany, for the 17th edition of the World Championships for Dragon Boat Racing.
Pam, a member of the Kingfisher Dragonboat Club Paynesville, gained selection in the Australian Aurora’s Senior “C” (over 60s) crew. Pam is a drummer and has been tasked with drumming for her age group with the 10s crews.
Drumming is an important motivational position in the dragon boat. Positioned at the front of the boat, the drummer plays a vital role in maintaining not only the tempo of the paddlers but also the spirit and cohesion of the team. They provide audible time keeping, constant encouragement to the crew and assist the sweep (boat steerer) by relaying crucial instructions while navigating the course.
The Auroras are made up of crews in under 18, under 23, Premier (open age), senior “A” (over 40s), senior “B” (over 50s) and senior “C” divisions. They will race in 10s and 20s crews over distances of 200m, 500m, 1km and 2km.
Pam has been working hard for almost a year, learning the calls required by the paddlers and maintaining her fitness to enable her to be balanced on the front of the dragon boat.
All at the Kingfisher Dragonboat Club Paynesville wish Pam and all the other Auroras the best for the culmination of this campaign.
