For more than 25 years 500 plus anglers have made their way to the picturesque waters of East Gippsland
to fish the Twin Rivers
Bream Classic and this year is no exception.
The townships of Nicholson, Swan Reach and Johnsonville are the home of the event and will be a hive of activity this weekend.
Over a quarter of a century ago some may remember the rivalry between local fishermen for the battle of the heaviest bream, great anticipation built at weigh-in stations as locals awaited the results if they were champions of the heaviest bag.
The competition continues to evolve each year
and is now a catch and release event.
What many will agree is that the social enjoyment and engagement from the younger to older generation keeps this comp an essential date in the calendar.
The Twin Rivers Bream Classic may not be a professional comp on the circuit, but it is a family event that welcomes novices to experienced – all enjoying a more relaxed approach to finding the longest Bream.
The draw card is always the major prize, this year being an Aquamaster 420 Open Boat Package valued at $27.500.
There is an array of additional prizes including; Hobie kayaks, luxury accommodation vouchers, Metung Hot Springs experiences and the promise that every child (12 and under) will walk away with a prize.
Courtesy of the Victorian Fishing Authority three golden tagged bream worth $5000 will be released into the waters for event participants to find. Please visit the event website for terms
and conditions.
Anglers can enter the competition online via the Twin Rivers website. Online registrations are open to midnight Friday, July 18 at 6pm. In person registrations open Friday, July 18 at the long-time supporter location, the Nicholson Hotel.
This year the event welcomes Lee Rayner from Fishing Edge as ambassador of the competition, his passion for the involvement of youth in fishing pairs perfectly with the vision of the organising committee. Lee will host the major prize draw on the Sunday.
”East Gippsland Shire Council is proud to support the Twin Rivers Bream Classic through our Pathways to Growth mentoring program, which helps home-grown events grow sustainably across our region. It’s fantastic to see this event go from strength to strength, attracting both the local community and returning anglers year after year,” mayor Cr John White said.
“It’s more than just a fishing comp, it’s about connection, traditions, and celebrating everything our region
has to offer.
“A big thank you to the dedicated organising committee. I’m looking forward to being there over the weekend so here’s to good weather, great company, and tight lines.”
The Twin Rivers Bream Classic major prize draw takes place at Johnsonville Boat Ramp on Sunday, July 20, from 11.30am. Several food vans plus the Twin Rivers Men’s Shed will be on hand to fill empty stomachs that need fuelling after a weekend fishing.
