He is described by those who know him as remarkable, compassionate and a powerful ally of the Aboriginal people of

East Gippsland.

Respected, admired and loved by Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative (GEGAC) staff and patients alike, GEGAC general practitioner, Dr Tim Watford, was recently recognised by his peers across the state as a finalist in the 2025 Victorian Rural Health Awards.

Dr Watford was nominated for the award of Outstanding Contribution by a Rural GP or Rural Generalist by GEGAC’s senior manager of Primary Health Care, Tammy-Lee Chatwin, who said that over the course of his career Dr Watford had shown an extraordinary dedication to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in this community.

“What truly sets him apart is his deep passion for fighting to close the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal health outcomes, he has shown immense respect for the traditions and values of the community, treating each patient with the dignity and empathy they deserve,” Chatwin said.

The nomination comes as bittersweet moment for Dr Watford’s colleagues at GEGAC, as he approaches his retirement next year.

“His extensive experience is complemented by his deep understanding of the cultural and socio-economic challenges faced by Aboriginal Australians.Over the past decade or so Dr Watford has become a trusted figure in the broader community, working closely with Aboriginal Elders, community leaders, and families to ensure that health services are not just available, but also accessible, effective, and culturally appropriate,” Chatwin said.

Chatwin explained that even at this moment, when many professionals are thinking mainly about their own rest and relaxation, Dr Watford has demonstrated his passion for, and commitment to, the health of Aboriginal people in this community.

“Dr. Watford’s decision to continue working at GEGAC is a testament to his extraordinary dedication to Aboriginal health, at an age when many would consider stepping back, he has chosen to remain in service, recognising the critical need for experienced healthcare professionals who understand the complexities of providing healthcare to Aboriginal communities,” Chatwin said.

Watford’s ongoing presence at GEGAC provides continuity for the community, ensuring that they continue to receive the high standard of care that Dr Watford has always delivered, but his impact extends beyond the clinic room.

“Dr. Watford has become a trusted figure in the broader community, working closely with Aboriginal Elders, community leaders, and families to ensure that health services are not just available, but also accessible, effective, and culturally appropriate,” she said. “The staff at GEGAC speak of him with the utmost respect and admiration, acknowledging his constant support, professionalism, and positive influence on the workplace environment,” Chatwin said.
