Adapt Fitness 24/7 opens in Bairnsdale

Bairnsdale locals Mike and Jess Young have swapped their careers as teachers for a new mission — creating a modern, welcoming space where the community can get fitter, stronger and healthier.

In May 2024, the couple opened a small fitness studio as a stepping stone towards their goal of opening a 24/7 gym. That goal was fast-tracked when an opportunity came up for a prime location in town — 123 Macleod Street.

“It was almost by chance,” Mike said.

“We’d just missed out on another site and when I mentioned it to Meaghan from A1 Drafting, she told me about the building right next door to her. We met the landlord, Barrie, and he was keen to give us a go. We’re really grateful to him for the opportunity.”

The journey hasn’t been without hurdles. From changing the planning permit to securing an occupancy permit, to the inevitable delays and budget blowouts, it’s been a labour of love. Along the way, family have played a huge role — Mike’s brother-in-law Dylan painted the walls, helped build the reception desk and even made IKEA runs to Melbourne, while another brother-in-law, Nathan, designed the logo, merchandise and signage.

For Mike and Jess, Adapt Fitness is more than a business, it’s a commitment to the town they grew up in.

“We want to be more than just a cookie-cutter franchise,” Mike said.

“This is a gym for the community — a place where people actually want to come, train, and feel supported in their health and wellbeing.”

Adapt Fitness plans to run community challenges, group personal training sessions tailored to members’ needs and even a unique online leaderboard to track members’ personal bests, adding a friendly competitive edge with incentives.

They also aim to work with local businesses on corporate membership programs.

Looking ahead, Mike and Jess see Adapt Fitness as a thriving, small-format gym that’s here to stay — a place where health, fitness and community come together.

Adapt Fitness 24/7 will officially open its doors on August 30, all are invited to check out the space.
