As part of this year’s 12th annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb on Saturday, September 6, the Bairnsdale Stair Climb Team hit the streets of Bairnsdale recently to thank their sponsors for their support before tackling the 28-floor climb.
Chelsea Beechey, Chris Verall and Simon Ellis hoisted on 25kg of gear to visit their sponsors, the same amount of weight they’ll be wearing while participating in the stair climb.
The Bairnsdale Stair Climb Team represents brigades from Bairnsdale, Sarsfield and Lakes Entrance, and have so far raised more than $10,000 to go towards Lifeline, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and the 000 Foundation to improve support services, fund research, removes stigmas and raise awareness surrounding mental health issues such as depression, Post Traumatic Stress injury and suicide.
The firefighters and Emergency Service personnel that participate annually start at street level and climb to a finishing line on the 28th floor of the Crown Metropol Hotel.
After the event an awards presentation ceremony is held that afternoon at Munich Brahaus, where fundraising and athletic achievement will be acknowledged.
Since the first event in 2014, the event has raised more than $4 millions for the Alfred Hospital Burns Unit, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Lifeline, the Black Dog Institute, 000 Foundation and the Emergency Services Foundation.
