In 2022, local couple Vanessa and Steve Wellman experienced the unthinkable: the tragic loss of their son Koby in a car accident.
Since then, their grief has fuelled a powerful mission: to prevent other families from enduring the same pain.
As part of Road Safety Awareness Month this September, the Wellmans have launched a heartfelt initiative called “Step Up for Rural Road Safety”. Their goal is to climb the stairs next to the yellow slide at Howitt Park 200 times over the course of the month — a symbolic and physical challenge to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
The challenge is also part of a broader effort by their newly established not-for-profit organisation, Eyes on the Road for Koby, which aims to educate and advocate for safer driving practices in rural communities.
Their message is simple but powerful: distracted driving can destroy lives, and the ripple effects of one mistake are felt forever.
This challenge is more than just a physical feat — it is a way for Vanessa and Steve to channel their grief into something constructive, helping with their own mental health while sparking important conversations in the community.
Now, they need the community’s support.
The public is invited to join them on the final day of their challenge, Saturday, September 27, at 11am, to show Vanessa and Steve that their efforts have not gone unnoticed.
“Let’s stand together to honour Koby’s memory and support a cause that could save lives,” organisers said.
“As part of this closing event, we’re also seeking donations from local businesses and individuals. Every contribution, big or small, will go towards providing defensive driving courses for local young drivers — a life-saving gift in Koby’s honour.
“Let’s rally behind this incredible couple and their mission. Together, we can make a difference.”
