On Monday, September 22, the Bairnsdale Regional Volunteer Group of Cancer Council Victoria celebrated its 45th anniversary as an ongoing fundraising group in this region.
President Jenny Whitworth welcomed the group of past and present members and supporters, and introduced guests, local MP Tim Bull and Grant Stutsel, a coordinator from Cancer Council’s Melbourne Office.
Secretary Nola Christie read the minutes of the first annual general meeting from 1980-81.
Treasurer Frances Langley, a long-serving current member for 38 years, gave a history of the group’s many and varied activities. Frances then announced this group’s contribution to Cancer Council since 1980 totals $536,075.00. Of this, $64,000 has recently been given to specific cancer research projects chosen by the members.
Local MP Tim Bull congratulated the group for its fundraising efforts for cancer research and support and noted the social benefits this group has for the community. He was interested to hear the history which brought back memories from when he was a cadet journalist.
Grant Stutsel, representing Cancer Council Victoria, sincerely thanked and commended the Bairnsdale Regional Volunteer Group for their commitment and success.
