Lucknow Kindergarten has earned national recognition for its creative and sustainable approach to gardening, winning a prestigious award from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.
The kindergarten was announced as one of just nine winners from a field of around 500 submissions across Australia at the National Kitchen Garden Awards ceremony. They took out the top prize in “The Art of Kitchen Gardening” category, which was presented by MSP Compass.
Lucknow Kindergarten’s Sara Brammar travelled to Adelaide on Tuesday, September 16, to accept the award on behalf of the kindergarten community, celebrating the impressive national achievement.
The winning entry detailed how the children responded to a common garden pest in a wonderfully artistic way. Faced with hungry birds feasting on their sunflower patch, the young students collaborated to design and build their own scarecrows.
Named Frankie and Timmy, the two vibrant characters were brought to life using entirely recycled materials, embedding sustainability into the core of the project. The children proudly watched their creations from their classroom window and checked on them during garden visits.
The project was a resounding success, not only protecting the sunflowers but also adding a splash of colour and fun to the outdoor space. The Foundation noted that the scarecrows sparked further creativity, with the children extending the theme into beautiful watercolour artworks.
