Bairnsdale basketballer Gabe Barnes-Hobson has returned home from an unforgettable international experience, representing Australia in the under 15 Gold Team at the NBA Basketball School International Tournament in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.
This incredible opportunity came off the back of winning a championship in the under 14 division at the AAU Spring Cup Challenge in Melbourne, where Barnes was invited to play with Hoop City Carrum Downs after being spotted at a Josh Giddey Basketball Camp.
The Australian under 15 Gold Team competed against talented squads from around the world, winning three out of five games beating India, Lebanon and Dubai teams in an impressive display of teamwork, determination
and sportsmanship.
Barnes, who plays locally for Gippsland United and the Maffra Eagles, described the experience as “a dream come true” and an incredible opportunity to learn from some of the best young athletes globally.
“It was amazing to play at that level, wear the green and gold, and test myself against players from so many different countries. I’m really grateful for everyone who helped make it possible,” he said.
In addition to competing internationally, Barnes also had the rare opportunity to train and receive coaching from international NBA and FIBA-level coaches, gaining insight into professional techniques, high-performance preparation, and advanced game strategies.
“To be coached by people who work with elite players from around the world was incredible, it showed me what it really takes to reach the next level,” Barnes said.
The experience was guided by coach David Pererya, an internationally recognised basketball coach whose leadership and mentoring played a major role in the team’s success and development.
He was able to make the trip after an extraordinary show of community spirit – Barnes and his family successfully raised $14,500 to cover travel, accommodation and uniform costs, an effort that drew support from across East Gippsland
and internationally.
Donations were made through Barnes’ online fundraising page, along with contributions from local businesses, community groups, and individual supporters both locally and internationally.
Special acknowledgement goes to the East Gippsland Sports Foundation for their sponsorship and ongoing encouragement of regional athletes, and to the Metung Lions Club, whose fundraising efforts and community support were instrumental in helping Barnes reach
Abu Dhabi.
Looking ahead, Barnes will continue fundraising through his Australian Sports Foundation platform.
This will help to support future training and playing opportunities, as well as give back to the community.
Part of this vision includes running local mini training camps and clinics to inspire and support other young athletes in East Gippsland who dream of following a similar path.
Now back home, Barnes is continuing his training and development,
inspired to take the next step on his basketball journey.
With dreams of one day playing professionally, he hopes to use his experience to motivate other young athletes from East Gippsland to chase their goals, no matter how far away they seem.
