Former Bairnsdale local Xavier Hall is about to embark on an extraordinary and dangerous world record attempt — travelling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Cairo, Egypt, entirely on foot.
Set to begin his journey in mid-November, the challenge will see the 26-year-old attempt to break the standing record of 10,000 kilometres in 301 days, set by Keith Boyd. While others have completed the route before, none have done so while racing the clock. Previous walkers took up to two and a half years and covered more than 16,000 kilometres.
Xavier’s route will differ from Boyd’s due to political unrest and safety concerns across parts of the continent. His planned path will take him through South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt — an estimated distance of 9900 kilometres.
One of the biggest challenges Xavier faces is that he will be entirely unassisted. Travelling solo, he will have no support crew or backup vehicle as he crosses deserts, wildlife reserves, and regions
of civil tension.
“There are many hotspots of unrest in some countries — not to mention large animals with big teeth,” said his father, Dennis Hall, who admits, “He’s bloody mad!” Despite that, Xavier’s mother, Linda, is backing him all the way.
A former Bairnsdale Secondary College student and Bairnsdale and Wy Yung football junior, Xavier is remembered by many for his enthusiasm and commitment to fitness — a passion he’s carried
into adulthood.
In preparation, Xavier has trained rigorously for several months, even living purposely homeless to save money and simulate the harsh nights he’ll face in the African wilderness.
Practical survival planning has been central to his preparation — from water purification tablets to sourcing basic food in regions where “home delivery won’t be an option.”
Xavier has named his record attempt “Xberience”, combining his love of adventure with a cause close to his heart — mental health awareness. He is raising funds for R U OK?, and donations can be made at join.ruok.org.au/fundraisers/xavierhall
While determined to raise as much money as possible for charity, Xavier also needs financial help to cover his journey’s costs. Despite saving $20,000, he’ll need additional support to make it the full distance. Donations can be made via his GoFundMe page.
“The further and faster I can go, the more I can raise for mental health,” Xavier said.
You can follow his journey on YouTube or Instagram, where he’ll share updates throughout his “Xberience.”
Locals can also meet Xavier in person and hear him speak about his incredible challenge at a trivia night on Friday, October 31, 7 pm, at the Wy Yung Clubrooms. Book a table with friends or come along solo — everyone is welcome.
Bookings can be made by contacting Xavier or Dennis (details available at the Advertiser office), or simply by showing up on the night.
