East Gippsland Shire Council has endorsed recommendations from an independent Planning Panel that will help guide the future growth of Paynesville and Eagle Point.
The panel, appointed by the Minister for Planning, reviewed proposed Planning Scheme Amendments through public hearings held in August. These amendments were prepared by council to support the long-term development of the two growing coastal communities. They focus on providing housing, community facilities, and protecting the
local environment.
Mayor Cr John White said the panel had carefully considered community feedback before backing
council’s plans.
“The Planning Panel considered submissions from landowners, residents and council, and found that the proposed plans offer a strong and strategic approach to meet future community needs,” Cr White said.
“The panel recommendations are an endorsement of the many years’ work that has gone into planning for the towns.”
In Paynesville, the plan supports the growth of new housing and infrastructure while preserving the town’s special character and the natural beauty of the Gippsland Lakes.
In Eagle Point, the focus is on supporting more limited growth that respects the village feel of the community and limits expansion.
“We’ve always said that growth in these towns must be managed in a way that benefits the community, supports the local economy and protects the things people love about living here,” Cr White said.
“The panel’s recommendations show we’re heading in the right direction, and we’ll now seek approval from the Minister for Planning to adopt the changes.”
Council will continue to work closely with landowners, developers, government agencies and the local community as more detailed planning gets underway to bring these plans to life.
