The Apex time capsule in Bairnsdale’s Main Street is set to be opened and later replaced, with retired Apexian Leigh Venables overseeing the project.
Leigh, who spent between 10 and 15 years as a member of the Bairnsdale Apex Club and ran a local business for two decades, is widely recognised for his strong community spirit and hands-on approach.
He is also remembered for installing more public seats around Bairnsdale and district than many government departments managed over the same period.
Leigh and fellow Apex members originally placed the time capsule in the Main Street gardens around 25 years ago. It was filled with sealed envelopes containing personal messages, stories and memorabilia from local residents. Community members will again be able to contribute an envelope when the capsule is resealed, with a small fee supporting Apex fundraising.
Leigh said the capsule had long generated interest, providing a meaningful snapshot of local history and personal reflection.
Current Apex publicity officer, Kassy O’Kelly, said the major celebration will be the day locals come together once more to add new envelopes for the next 25-year cycle — a timespan that often outlasts committees, councils and even some of the contributors themselves.
The resealing event is planned for Saturday, 21 March 2026, and the Bairnsdale Apex Club hopes to see a strong turnout for a community barbecue and the historic ceremony.
The Bairnsdale Apex Club continues its tradition of community service and is encouraging younger residents to join, get involved in local projects, and help foster community spirit.
