St Mary’s Church in Bairnsdale hosted its first-ever Simbang Gabi, the traditional Filipino nine-day novena in preparation for Christmas, from December 15 to 23.
The series of celebrations marked a significant milestone for both the parish and the wider Gippsland community.
Simbang Gabi, which translates to “Night Mass”, is a centuries-old devotion originating in the Philippines and is traditionally celebrated before dawn. In Bairnsdale, the novena has been scheduled for the evening to encourage broader participation, while remaining faithful to the spiritual intent of the tradition.
The celebration reflects the strong faith and dedication of the local Filipino Catholic community, with participants expected to travel from across the region. Parishioners are anticipated to attend from as far as Lakes Entrance, including fishermen and their families, joining the novena when they return from extended fishing trips. Their involvement highlights the spirit of sacrifice, perseverance and devotion at the heart of Simbang Gabi.
Each night of the novena features reverent liturgy, Filipino hymns and communal prayer, creating a culturally rich and spiritually uplifting experience. In keeping with Filipino tradition, each evening concludes with a shared meal, fostering fellowship and offering parishioners and visitors a taste of Filipino hospitality and culture.
The nine-day celebration culminated on December 23 with a special Mass followed by a traditional Filipino feast at St Mary’s Parish Hall. Lechon, a centrepiece of Filipino festive celebrations, was served on the final night.
All parishioners and members of the wider community are warmly invited to attend the Mass and join the concluding feast, whether to participate in the novena or simply to share in the celebration.
The introduction of Simbang Gabi at St Mary’s Church represents an important step in embracing cultural diversity within the parish. Whether still in progress or recently completed, the first Simbang Gabi in Bairnsdale stands as a meaningful expression of faith, unity and community in the lead-up to Christmas.
