Lindenow South Primary School students took part in a practical and engaging learning experience recently through the school’s Firewise Tree Planting Project, delivered in partnership with members of the Glenaladale Landcare Group.
Students and staff worked alongside Landcare volunteers to plant, guard and water a variety of Firewise plant species, which will form a new demonstration garden at the school.
The activity encouraged teamwork while helping students understand the importance of selecting low-flammability plants for bushfire-prone areas.
A highlight of the project was a flammability demonstration using a butane torch to test different plant types.
The demonstration prompted lively discussion among students about how thoughtful garden design can contribute to community safety during fire seasons.
The project was completed on Thursday, December 11, with participants coming together for a barbecue lunch to celebrate their efforts and acknowledge a successful day of learning and collaboration.
Assistant principal Stephanie Hoekstra said the project provided valuable real-world learning opportunities for students.
“This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn by doing, while also contributing to a project that benefits both the school and the wider community,” she said.
The Firewise Garden will continue to develop as a living classroom, offering ongoing educational opportunities while showcasing practical, fire-safe landscaping ideas for the broader community.
