The battle for a coveted Bairnsdale Cricket Association finals spot played out at Bairnsdale City Oval last Saturday on day one of round 14 action, as fourth-placed West Bairnsdale (34 points) faced fifth-placed Orbost (30 points) in a crucial contest for six vital points.
After 80 overs on day one, it was the Blues who held a slight advantage, setting up an intriguing day two before any ladder changes are confirmed.
Sent in by Orbost, West Bairnsdale struggled to 133, being dismissed in the 62nd over. In reply, the Blues found themselves in early trouble at 2/19 but battled to 2/49 off 18 overs at stumps. Batting proved difficult for both sides, with players mindful this could be the most important match of their campaign.
West openers Brodie Anderson (25 from 96 balls) and Tom Hudson (12 from 32) worked hard early before Hudson fell to Nick Davis, who finished the day with impressive figures of 4/34. Captain Ryan Halford (22 from 22) looked set for a big innings but also succumbed to Davis.
West’s innings quickly slid from 2/54 (17th over) to 5/77 (35th over) as Mitchell Toms, Jake Anderson and Brodie Anderson all returned to the pavilion. Orbost’s tight bowling, led by Luke Endley (2/53) and Josh Court (3/28 from 15 overs), forced mistakes and prevented the batsmen from gaining momentum.
Atley Williams (53 from 71) top-scored for West with support from Oscar Clarke (three from 51), while tail-enders Jack Lind, Brad Daniel and Chris Hammond focused on survival before the innings wrapped up with wickets to Davis.
Orbost’s reply began shakily, losing Luke Humphries in the fourth over, bowled by Lind, and Endley in the next over, taken by Patrick Halford. Anxiety reigned over the next 13 overs as Alfie Lindsay (12 from 41) and Jayden Price (18 from 39) negotiated their way to stumps. Halford and Hammond kept the pressure on, with keeper Williams alert at the stumps.
The stage is set for an exciting conclusion this weekend. West Bairnsdale will look to key players Curtley Farley, Court and the Hulme brothers for runs, while Brodie Anderson is expected to play a pivotal role with the ball. Price, in particular, looked comfortable at the crease and could be a major factor as West aims to secure a crucial victory.
