Get ready for a splash of joy as the Bairnsdale Chamber of Commerce and Industry presents the Holi Festival of Colour this Saturday, March 7.
The Nicholson Street Mall will be transformed from 11am to 3pm into a vibrant celebration of Indian heritage, bringing together East Gippsland residents for a day of music, culture, and community spirit.
The free festival offers a unique fusion of flavours, with attendees able to sample authentic Indian street food alongside a classic Aussie barbecue — perfect for families and friends to share.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, local favourites Mick Harrington and Janaki Easwar, known for their appearances on The Voice Australia, will perform live. The performances will be complemented by a range of cultural displays celebrating the traditions of the Indian subcontinent.
The highlight of the afternoon will be the traditional “Play Holi” session. Participants are encouraged to “dress to get messy” and join the community in throwing brightly coloured powders, symbolising the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring — fun for all ages.
“This is about more than just a festival, it’s about sharing Indian culture and building community spirit right here in East Gippsland,” Chamber of Commerce president Trevor Hancock said.
This year’s event also features a diverse mix of performances: DJ Ty Gatt will keep energy levels high with upbeat tracks, Grazy’s Country will perform a lively mix of American and Australian country favourites, and Beggs2Differ will bring a unique musical flavour. Students from Wild Cherry School will add a heart–warming touch with a selection of songs, making it a truly inclusive community celebration.
The festival is proudly supported by local businesses and organisations, including The Maharaja Palace, Gippsland Critical Minerals, and the East Gippsland Shire Council.
In true Holi tradition, a little rain will not dampen the fun. In India, Holi often coincides with the rainy season, making showers part of the celebration. Rain is refreshing, better for nature, and even helps the colours wash off more easily.
With a fusion of colour, music, dance and culture, the 2026 Bairnsdale Holi Festival promises to be one of the region’s most joyous community gatherings. Rain or shine, locals are invited to celebrate in full colour.
