Shalini Mukherjee says the most rewarding part of her role on the child protection frontline is being part of positive change in the lives of children, young people, and families.
Shalini arrived in Australia in 2019 and initially worked at The Orange Door before joining Child Protection.
She first travelled to Bairnsdale in 2023 while still at The Orange Door and has since settled into the region, embracing both the role and the community.
“I have always been interested in child protection – the challenges spark my interest,” she said.
“The work can be very full on. The disclosures you hear as a frontline worker can affect you because it’s real, and it’s happening. But it’s a privilege to go into people’s spaces, learn, listen, provide support, and be an advocate.”
Shalini says one of her career highlights involved a case with three children whose parent was experiencing significant substance use. Filing a protection application was one of the hardest moments she’s faced.
“I built relationships with the children to gain their trust, and they started to open up,” she said.
“One child had behavioural issues and was reluctant to attend school. With the right support, he’s now thriving academically and socially.”
Shalini also developed a constructive relationship with the parent, helping her recognise challenges and access supports.
“For me, this story is a highlight because I was part of a positive change for that child and family,” she said.
She praises working in Bairnsdale and Outer Gippsland for the combination of community connection and natural beauty.
“This area has my heart,” she said.
“The opportunities to work with families and the community are very rich.
“Gippsland is a great place to live and work – you’re right in nature and community. Given the demands of Child Protection, it’s important to have spaces where you can unwind, and here you can explore beaches, parks, or even hot springs.”
Shalini says working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) has been a particularly rewarding part of her career.
“It fills me with so much happiness,” she said.
Child Protection offers a pathway for social workers seeking experience, skill development, and the chance to make a meaningful impact in communities.
