The 11th Opera by the Lakes (OBTL) enthralled audiences at Nyerimilang Heritage Park near Lakes Entrance on Sunday, March 15, with world-class performances set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Gippsland Lakes.
Singers Georgia Wilkinson, currently touring Europe as the lead in Phantom of the Opera, and Rob McDougall, star of Les Misérables in Sydney, delivered a mix of opera and musical theatre highlights, including iconic arias and duets that drew a standing ovation.
Australian Idol finalist William Le Brun added a swing element, wowing the crowd with numbers such as New York, New York.
Community groups and volunteers played a crucial role, from serving afternoon tea and cakes to assisting with carparking and event setup, reinforcing OBTL’s reputation as a highly collaborative local event. Guests also appreciated the ease of access, stunning views, and family-friendly atmosphere.
Audience feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the combination of opera, musicals, and swing as a refreshing change from traditional concerts.
“The performers looked as though they were enjoying being there, as were the audience,” one attendee said, while another called it “a fabulous afternoon” and “one of my favourite days of the year.”
