Food, culture, and community took centre stage at Bairnsdale Christian College recently, as student leaders hosted a vibrant Cultural Day to celebrate the school’s diverse heritage.
The student-led initiative invited families to go beyond the lunchbox and share traditional dishes from their own cultural backgrounds.
From savoury family recipes to sweet international treats, the day provided a unique opportunity for students and staff to explore global traditions through the universal language of food.
Beyond the flavours, the event served as a practical reflection of the school’s Christian values, emphasising unity, gratitude, and a sense of belonging for every family.
One student leader noted that the event was about more than just a meal.
“It was really special seeing everyone bring food from their culture,” they said.
“It reminded me that even though we are different, we are all part of one community.”
The hands-on learning experience
resonated with the student body, who spent the day rotating between displays and sampling new cuisines.
“I loved trying foods from different countries and learning about other families’ cultures,” shared one student.
“It was a really fun way to celebrate together.”
For the staff, the success of the day was found in the initiative shown by the school’s emerging leaders.
“Watching our students lead the day and welcome everyone so warmly was fantastic,” a staff member remarked.
“It reflected the servant-hearted culture we are seeking to build at Bairnsdale Christian College.”
The day concluded with a shared sense of pride, leaving the school community with a deeper understanding of the many backgrounds that make up the Bairnsdale Christian College family.
