The theatrical dance eisteddfod circuit is off to a flying start for students of the Jan Pianta School of Dance (JPSD), with local performers dominating the Gippsland Stars Dance Competition held in Traralgon last month.
Representing the school were nine-year-old Olivia McInnes, 11-year-old Ella McInnes, and 16-year-old Iris Miller.
Under the competition rules, each dancer was permitted to perform four solos, with the added option of entering the prestigious ‘Star Dancer’ championship sections for their respective
age groups.
The results were exceptional, with both Olivia and Ella achieving a clean sweep, receiving first place trophies for all four of their solos.
Iris also impressed the judges, securing three first place trophies and one second place.
All three dancers then went on to win first place in their ‘Star Dancer’ categories.
This consistent success resulted in the trio claiming the overall Age Aggregate Trophies for the Under 10, Under 12, and Open sections.
The performances drew high praise from Melbourne-based adjudicator Karen Malek, who remarked on several occasions how beautifully trained the JPSD dancers appeared on stage.
Principal Jan Pianta, who choreographed 14 of the 15 solos performed, noted that the Gippsland Stars event is a favourite for local families.
“Parents love this type of competition because it runs over a single day,” Ms Pianta said.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for dancers to perfect their style and artistry for the longer eisteddfods, particularly when they are debuting brand-new solos that have never been seen on stage before.”
The variety of genres showcased the school’s versatility, ranging from classical ballet and national dance to contemporary, demi-character, lyrical, and jazz.
Olivia also debuted a brand-new Hip Hop solo choreographed by Shaun Carr.
The visual impact of the performances was enhanced by JPSD costume designer Marlene Rijs, whose stylish and unique creations contributed to the dancers’ stage presence.
This successful start to the season is a testament to the hard work and long hours dedicated by the students and staff in the lead-up to the event.
