Member for Gippsland East, Tim Bull, has announced he will not contest the upcoming state election in November, bringing to a close a distinguished 16-year career in the Victorian Parliament.
First elected in 2010, Mr Bull has spent 13 of his 16 years in public office serving on the front bench as both a Minister and Shadow Minister.
He confirmed that he had been considering the decision since the 2022 election and feels the time is now right to move into a new chapter.
“My family and close friends have known since the last election that this would likely be my final term,” Mr Bull said.
“I have taken the time to ensure there were no second thoughts, and there are none.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr Bull said the most rewarding aspect of the role was witnessing the community’s resilience during periods of extreme hardship, including the devastating 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires and numerous flood events.
“Helping people has been the most rewarding, seeing the community coming together during tough times,” he said.
“Being a very small part of that has been very rewarding and humbling.”
The Leader of The Nationals, Danny O’Brien, paid tribute to Mr Bull, describing him as a “champion for East Gippsland” and a passionate advocate for its people and industries.
“Bully has served the Parliament and the people of Victoria with distinction,” Mr O’Brien said.
“As one of Parliament’s best characters, he’s brought a larrikin spirit that endeared him to all on both sides of politics and delivered personal relationships that helped his community get what it needed, when it needed it.”
While he is stepping back from the political arena, Mr Bull clarified that he is not retiring.
He plans to pursue volunteer work, including his involvement with the Arthur Grassby Kokoda program, and spend more time with his family.
“What lies ahead remains very much an open book, but I will continue to enjoy living in East Gippsland and being part of this community for many years to come,” Mr Bull said.
He added that he is particularly looking forward to watching his daughter play football in Melbourne.
Mr Bull paid tribute to his long-standing staff, particularly Gaynor, who has been with him since day one, as well as Jess and Anthony – and thanked his wife, Kim, and their children for their years of support.
As for the future of the seat, Mr Bull expressed total confidence in his party’s prospects.
The Nationals are expected to finalise pre-selection for the Gippsland East electorate by the end of June.
Mr Bull has pledged to continue representing the region to the best of his ability until his term officially concludes in November.
