In an age where staying active is key to longevity, the Bairnsdale Keenagers Table Tennis Club continues to serve as a beacon for local seniors.
Boasting a “venerable history” as the first of its kind in Victoria, the club remains a vibrant testament to the vision of its founders, John and June Gale.
The club’s origins are rooted in the determination of the late John Gale, a retired Anglican minister. While recovering from a stroke, he tirelessly navigated layers of bureaucracy to help establish what is now the multi-purpose Bairnsdale Squash, Racquetball and Table Tennis Centre in Lucknow.
Together with his wife, June, John championed the belief that health and vitality should be accessible at every age and skill level. Their far-reaching legacy lives on through every serve and rally.
Every Monday and Thursday morning (excluding Christmas Day), a dedicated band of seniors gathers for a session that is as much about social connection as it is about sport. For a modest $5 fee, participants enjoy two-and-a-half hours of play in a friendly, inclusive environment.

Organisers Dave Pratt and Barry Chappell ensure a structured format where players of all levels can mix, allowing less experienced participants to develop their skills alongside seasoned players. Games are played in doubles on permanently set-up tables, encouraging teamwork and constant movement.
Many players are retired former tennis players, with a growing number of women participants — a trend the club is keen to continue encouraging.
The physical benefits of the sport are matched by its strong social focus. A mid-session tea and coffee break allows participants to rest, share local news and enjoy the club’s welcoming atmosphere.
“It’s about having a hit and a laugh,” a club member said.
“Whether you are fiercely competitive or just here for the company, there is a place for you on the court.”
Sessions run from 8.30 am to 11 am.
