The inaugural High Country Hooch Scottish Festival attracted more than 600 people to the High Country Hooch Distillery at Glenaladale on Saturday, June 27, for a spectacular celebration of Scottish culture, music, and winter festivities.
Held under perfect blue skies, visitors travelled from across Gippsland, Melbourne, and further afield to experience a unique day of traditional Scottish entertainment, activities, food, and Highland hospitality.
The program featured crowd favourites including the 100-metre Kilted Dash, barrel-rolling races, and a gumboot throwing competition, with competitors and spectators embracing the fun and family-friendly atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
One of the day’s defining moments came at sunset when the Sale RSL Pipe Band and Glenbrae Celtic Dancers performed against the backdrop of the rolling Gippsland hills. The stirring sound of bagpipes and drums echoed across the property, bringing the large crowd to a standstill in an unforgettable performance.
Scottish musician Graeme McColgan, better known as “The Scotsman,” delivered the traditional Address to the Haggis before entertaining festivalgoers well into the evening with his energetic mix of Scottish songs and storytelling.
As darkness fell and temperatures dropped, the lighting of an enormous bonfire created a spectacular centrepiece, providing warmth while adding to the magical winter atmosphere. The celebrations continued late into the evening inside the High Country Hooch tasting room, where roaring wood fires, live music, singing, and dancing ensured the inaugural festival finished on a high.
Festival organisers were thrilled with the community response.
“The atmosphere throughout the day was incredible. From the bagpipes at sunset to the bonfire and the music carrying on into the evening, it was everything we hoped the event would be and more—we were blown away by the response,” High Country Hooch co-owner Mr Paul Poulter said.
“A big thanks to the wonderful performers, volunteers and everyone who helped bring the event to life. We’ve already started planning for next year.”
The High Country Hooch Scottish Festival is one of more than 100 events taking place as part of the East Gippsland Winter Festival, a month-long celebration of food, music, art,
and culture running until July 19.
